Subject: Cylinder 5 Misfire Mystery IP: Logged
Message: 1997 Dak RC 5 Speed 3.9V6 88,000 Miles
Brand new
Plugs, wires, cap rotor, IAT, TPS, Battery, Fuel Pressure good
this problem has been on going for along time and i was unable to track down the cause until it finally coughed up a code
Cylinder 5 misfire
Ive changed everything i thought could cause this code and yet nope
Heres the odd part the engine will only missfire once and awhile Really bad on a cold start up(truck sitting over night) But not always. Some times when warm but not all the time.
The only reason why i got this code this time as i was heading to work this morning and it was running like a piece so i punched it through 3 gears and it coughed up this code
Anyone have any clue on what else it could be i just want a strong running truck again

Message: Im not one to claim to know every thing but i like to speculate.. Excessive carbon in your combustion chambers could be igniteing your fuel prematurely. Have you done any engine mods?? Are you using 87 octane? <-- just throwing that out there.. Have you tried a fuel injection cleaning service.. How does your exaust manifold gaskets look?? Im not sure if that would set off that code but i would look there and eliminate that possiblity.

Message: the misfire code is usualy caused by an injector
problem
bad injector
check wires at injector plug
1 side ASD volts should read same as batt volts
2 driver side check with ohm meter from injector
plug to pin at computer no resistance in wire
If the spark plug and wires are good the obd2
computers fail and also cause this but check everything else first
I have seen a few bad comps doing this misfire
code

Message: I actually had a Cylinder misfire 4 in my 01 Dakota for about a year. Would come and go and then two weeks ago I blew a head gasket. Come to find out that both cylinder heads were cracked in 6 different places. This was most likely causing the misfire as the heads would heat up and seal up after it had been running awhile. I replaced everything also and could not find the problem. Would run rough like your describing like a vacuum leak was occurring. Now I know it was a huge vacuum leak. BTW, You better hope it's not the same problem. Cost $2700.00 to fix.

Message: Ouch $2700 wow i would just go and get used heads from the junk yard if that was the case. But since i pulled number 5 injector and had a look at everything the truck has been running ok
But now that ive said that it will act up again
Ouch tho 2700 u must of had a shop do the work im guessing?

Message: epyon if the issue happens again and it's the same cylinder, you can swap 2 injectors and see if the problem follows the injector.
I agree usually a misfire on a single cylinder is an injector. If it were on all cylinders that would be a different story.

Message: Yeah, it was a shop I took it too. I wasn't about to attempt that myself. I originally thought it was probably the water pump when radiator fluid began pouring out the front of the engine. They did a block test and that's when the cracked heads were found. Most of the cost was labor of course but at least I don't have to worry about it anymore, and I got 2700 sky miles too!

Message: I hope you don't fly Delta with those miles. Since Delta is HQ'd in Atlanta they are always in the news here. I saw an article where they are considering (maybe already a done deal) charge customer to redeem their FREE miles.

Message: lol, it is Delta but I haven't heard anything yet on that. Not unexpected due to today's economy. Airlines have to make it up someway. I just hope they don't cancel the miles program before I can use it. I am expecting that. I don't have enough for a free ticket anyway, probably later this year. It never ends.

Message: If messing around with the injector solved the
misfire code it must just have been a bad
connection
But you must remember to knock on wood when you
say it is now running good
If you get heads from a bone yard the first thing
to do is get them magnafluxed to be sure they
are nit cracked
A cracked head on a V6 is rare it must have been
overheated somewhere along the line to do that
and also blow the head gaskets
Gaskets can also blow from poor maintainance the
coolent becomes carosive and will eat the metal
gasket
Its a good idea to flush and refill with new
antifreeze every 5 years and this will not happen
Good to hear your misfire code is gone most
suspect a plug or a wire but its usualy and
injector or injector wire triping the code
