97 Dakota 3.9 V6 22-gal tank
Here's a puzzle for you Dakota gurus....
Having a fuel problem that has been going on for months now. Runs perfectly as long as fuel tank is at least 1/2 full. Anywhere below 1/2 tank, engine can miss and sputter badly, sometimes even stall completely, and leave me stranded. I visualize something floating in the tank and blocking the intake when the level is just right, however my mechanic says with the shape of the pump intake this is unlikey. Says the fuel pump is just "bad." But why would it run perfectly above 1/2 tank, and only sputter below 1/2 tank? Sometimes it can go below 1/4 tank before there is trouble. Here's another tidbit: When it stalls, if I wait a few minutes, then jump up and own on the tailgate to jostle the tank, it will usually get going again long enough for me to make it to the nearest gas station. Adding gas to the tank always cures the problem. Any ideas?

when the tank is full the pump will run colder
when the level drops it runs hot and shuts down

Its bad I have never seen a pickup fall off but
there is a short hose that from running our fine
gasoline with alcohal could have destroyed this
hose but unlikly

Get a master replacement comes with new pump
filter and guage sender around $250 Auto Zone
hast the carter replacements

No mater what it is you need to drop the tank and
fix it

I had the same problem with my 88 and it was in the fuel line in the pump its self, like Larry said, replace the pump and it should be fine. In my truck it was fine at just above 1/2 tank or more, but when the fuel level dropped below the 1/2 mark it was below the cracked piece of the hose that goes from the bottom of the tank to the throttle body.
Good Luck

I should also mention, I'm a moron and have to respond to every post. Even though 75% of the time I have no idea what the hell I'm talking about. I just have to show how big of an idiot I am.

Hey a cracked hose is worth hearing about

The pump is located so above half its actualy
in the gasoline under half just air cooled

They have what is called a themister that when hot
cuts out the power

get the master replacement from auto zone they
sell the carter brand which work very well and
run 47 to 50 psi more pressure better atomization
gives you better mileage

I have even seen some of thess cartes run 55 psi
I run an aftermarket holly at 55psi and I get
20 21 winter 24 25mpg summer 40 is minimum on a
multiport system under that they will still run
but the gas mileage will drop
