Subject: 92 3.9 won't start when hot IP: Logged
Message: Changed pickup in distributor, distributor cap, sparkplug wires, coil, sparkplugs. Checked all the grounds I could find. Checked Pin 5,11,12, on PCM. Using Haynes wiring diagram. When hot I have voltage across the ASD relay coil, but not the fuel pump relay coil (when I try to start it.) Also changed the coolant temperature sensor. Ignition switch goes to A21 splice and then to ASD and Fuel pump relays. I checked the splices I could find (the ones everybody mentions). Did I miss the A21 splice? It looks like the relays use a common ground. I have switched all the relays around.
When engine is cold starts right up and will run good until you shut it down and let it sit for a few minutes. Then it won't start until it cools off. On a real hot day that could be a while.

Message: Probably a splice. But did you check fault codes? That's always the first step.

Message: Thanks for the info guys. It does not set a code. Also when it doesn't start, it does not energize the ASD and Fuel pump relays. Looking at other posts stated that if no distributor signal received by PCM-ground will be removed from the ASD pin 51 and that would keep fuel pump and ASD from being energized. Also if ASD not energized battery voltage is not supplied to the ignition coil. I did check pins 3 and 9 ok! I did resolder a splice that was I think 3 red/white wires. It was just to the right side of relay box. Also, can anyone tell me what the crankshaft position sensor does in all this.

Message: I am chasing the very same problem except mine won't start at any time.
I have no spark and all the symptoms are the same.
I replaced ECU because before it quit it was overcharging.

Message: ruff, the only thing you haven't replaced is the crank position sensor. I bet it gets hot and goes south. I'm replacing mine this weekend. only $30, what have I got to lose?

Message: Mabee you got a bad coil? Even though you just replaced it it can still be bad. I was having a similar prob on my 92. Chased it and chased it. I finally got p-off and replaced the coil again. I fired right up!!! No prob sinse then...
Just an afterthought...
No fuel, means no fire then it wont run...
No fire, means no fuel then it wont run...
Thats where I was for a long time...

Message: Just a hopeful report. So far it looks good. Replaced the Crank Position Sensor. Easy to do on a 92. No intentional rhyming. Have run it until hot, then shutdown and let cook, several times. Still looking good. Sensor prices run from 56.99 (lowest) up to 110.00. There is a large price difference between manual tran and automatic. Manual is higher.
Thanks for the interest shown
