Subject: p 0505.. im missing something somewhere IP: Logged
Message: Message:
Ok ive been sitting here for about 2 hours looking for a similiar fault on another thread. I bought a 2000 v6 4x4 dakota with the check engine light on. p0505 or idle sensor malfunction. Visual inspection did not reveal any vacum leaks. After removing and cleaning the throttle bottle and replacing the IAC, plus a trip to ND, I came down with what seemed to be a obvious skip at a cold idle.. so i pulled the intake and replaced the gaskets and seals.. Not my first rodeo by any means so the job was done correctely. After about 5 attempts to start the vehicle it finally came on, ran for about 2 minutes, then the engine light came back on. no more skip at cold idle but its the same code.. I have ran out of things to check.. I wanna say its a vacum leak, but i just dont see any...
the vehicle has 58k miles and other wise runs great getting 17-18 mpg.
I posted in a earlier thread but im thinking that may not of been appropiate..

Message: com on guys. thro me some suggestions.. Ive never owned a dodge before. im sure there is something im overlooking but i dont know what it is.. Im half tempted to change my brake booster but i dont hear that vacum sound when i hit the brakes..Iv'e check the evap sys and all lines seem good.. I'v even plugged my pcv valve to see if maybeits bad but i just dont see it.. maybe that thread on bad computers apply's here... but would it set off that code 0505?
I just went to padre island and drove 120 miles round trip on beach sand and other than tweaking a torsion bar the truck did awesome.... I just hate the check engine light.... all my check valves work within my ac/vent system.... Im just not familiar at all with my truck. I bought it as a present to myself when i got back from iraq 2 months ago and i love it. I put some 31's on stock rims and just fund out it has 3.92 gears.. wow.. i should have made acomadations for 33's but then just gives me a excuse to wear out tires even faster..lol.. I've slept in my truck more times than i countcount on my hand i wanna be able to keep this truck for a long time...
so talk to me like im stupid and lets cover the basics, i know im missing some info somewhere... i think it som simple that im just overlooking something somewhere but im not knowlegable enough to know where to look...
thanks for ya'lls help

Message: P0505 - Idle Air Control Motor Circuits - A vehicle speed signal was not detected.
Usually, vacuum line problems are in the p0440 series (and I've had aplenty of them). Since this is indicating a missing speed signal, possibly the speed/abs sensor in the differential or speed sensor in transmission. I think the rear wheel speed sensor is relatively cheap, around $20.
Thanks for the service to your country, btw.

Message: Maybe Larry or one of the other guys with more info will jump in here. Couple more questions for you, though -- any trouble with the speedo, or ABS Brake light? Any shifting trouble (you don't say whether it's auto or not)? If you have any speedo or ABS Brake light issues, it's more than likely the rear wheel speed sensor. If you're having any shifting problems, then it would probably be the one on the tranny. Of course, they could both be bad. From what I hear, RWSS is a pretty common failure on Dakotas and Durangos.
When I think about it, I'd think that a change in tire size would also have an impact on the RWSS. Wonder if you have to reset your PCM just to go to bigger tires?

Message: Automatic trans with 31's but before the tires it still had the engine ligh on. Speedo and abs is fine.. Shifting is a little hard but the tranny mount doesnt look so kosher so im not too worried about that..
Question for you though... I did a little research and could only find the description "p0505 idle air sensor malfuntion" Where did you find the other part to it "A vehicle speed signal was not decteted"?
Well i usually keep my truck pretty warm out here in texas and just learned that if i let it sit and cool down longer than overnight, (i know this sounds weird) then i begins to idle rough and not idle at all but only when its cold..After 10 mins or so it begins to idle normally and runs fine.. (just learned this yesterday)
My first reaction was to check the egr valve..(dont laugh) ok so i skipped that and started looking into the 02 sensors.. I learned that untill the o2 sensor is warm enough to send a good signal the ecm relies on other sensors for a air/fuel mixture.. So maybe a Map sensor? or temp sensor.. ???????????????????
My multi meter is shot so i never was able to test the rear speed sensor.. If any body knows the propper testing procedure for the rear speed sensor and trans speed sensor i would greatly appriciat it.. Guess i need to spend more that 9 bucks on a multi meter lol

Message: not sure about your p0505 but that rough idle on a cold start could be an indication of a weak battery. if the battery is weak it can start the truck but the PCM will lose idle memory and idle rough for the first minnute or so(ask me how i know). clean all battery connections and load test the battery. most places will test it for free.

Message: Heck, I didn't spend but about $15 for my multimeter, so don't feel like the Lone Ranger. That second part is in the code list that I have, and I absolutely don't recall where I got it from - maybe from the OBDII site? I also saw it on another site. (http://www.customdakotas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4338)
You said you replaced the IAC, right? Or did you clean and replace? Also, you DID use a new gasket when you cleaned your TB? I'd check the battery like Daddio suggested, and before I replaced anything else I'd go check all the grounds, making sure they're not dirty/corroded/rusting away.

Message: Yes i replaced the IAC and cleand the throttle body at the same time.. Ive looked at the ground wires that i can see and they are snug and very clean..
No.. i didnt use a new gasket.. maybe thats what im overlooking.. The gasket appeared to be in good condition and the felt gasket looks good too..
I went to autozone and they load tested the battery for me and it checkout good.. Later this afternoon i will get up under that hood and take a harder look at all the grounds.. I guess it wouldnt hurt to replace that throttle body gasket...

Message: Still having problem ?
Since you replaced the IAC 'motor' - back of throttle body - did you reconnect the wires to it ? If so , wiring harness problem or connection to computer = possible dirty ground .
Not sure about 2000 - older had ground wire from computer going to alternator bracket.

Message: Sorry I had a busy 4th weekend. It consisted mailny of beer and mud.. lol.. we had some rain here in san antonio and had to take advantage of the situation. Hadnt had a chance to pop the hood long enough to do anything but check all the grounds.. I searched high and low and all the ones i found appear to be immaculate. I did find a broken wire under the radiater/oil cooler assembly. looked like it had a connecter on it that was ripped off. on the other side was a connector that had a cap on it and was tied up off to the side.. dont think its related but i do need to pull out the wire schematics and find out where it goes. I have a base model so im thinking some accesory that was never equipped.. I drove that truck hard every day for the past week and it ran great with exception of the rough idle at a cold start. even spent about 2 hours trying to dig my self out of a mud hole and (passenger side was buried above the axles) and the abuse i gave her, she took pretty well.. gimme a couple of days and i will replace that throttle body gasket and research that broken wire and let yall know what my findings are..

Message: Have you had any luck solving the "P0505" problem? I've got a 99, and it's driving me nuts! I did the new IAC Motor, replaced vacuum lines, cleaned everything (twice), gaskets as needed, properly re-torqued, and the code comes back almost daily now!!
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
