Subject: Rears & Gears??
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi, I have a '99 Dakota Sport 4x4, 5spd, V6 and I don't know what gears are in it. I know to look for the tag on the rear itself but they're both broken off and the manual only lists the three gear options (321, 355, and 396) I'm guessing I have the 321's judging by the pickup after I switched to 32x11.50 tires but if anyone knows which years/submodels have which gears that would be great because I'd like to find a junkyard truck with 396's and just swap the rears. Any info will help, thanks.

Flip, it should be in the glove box it will show which gear you have, or you may be able to remove the rear cover, (may need the oil changed anyway) and it should have the ratio on the ringgear all you would have to do is slowly turn one wheel and wipe off the oil and it should have a part number and ratio. Just one more thing, the ratio's are 3:21, 3:55 and 3:92. I don't think they had a 3:96.
Good Luck

Yea, I was looking around the site and saw something posted about the glove box sticker but I haven't gotten a chance to look yet. Hah, and I realized the 3:96 slip up but figured it wasn't worth correcting myself.
Thanks again,
-Flip

Most likly you have the 3.55

8.25
3.55 std
3.91 trailer tow package or spec order
also a 4.10 option

the 8.25 is 3.91 not 3.92 and the 3.21 was used
in the pre mag daks also 3.23

chrysler never made anything with a 3.96

Yea, they're 3.55's with the 8.25... thanks for the info as far as the other options go because I think I'm just going to look for a junkyard truck with 3.92's or better yet the 4.10's.
...I know I slipped up saying 3.96 but my manual lists the options for '99 as 3.21, 3.55, and 3.92... not like it matters one way or the other, and maybe those slight changes are for other rear options (did dakotas use Dana 44's?) just a thought, and thanks again for the info.

The only 4.10 geared Daks I've ever seen or heard of were custom jobs like mine - not factory. When are you claiming this was an option ? Defintely wasn't an option in '00...

Is the "idiot Kowalski's" question too hard for Larry to answer ? One would think it was Kowalski having the difficulty, the way some of these idiots are carrying on with their hero worship. Unless it's been Larry himself posting that trash.
