Subject: the infamous diff... little help? IP: Logged
Message: i was just wondering... my diff blew out at 65000 mi. on an 01. mech said it was a bad yoke and dodge no longer makes replacement rears for that year. so the junkyard replacement is a 3.22 or 23 gear but i thought the v6 was 3.55 from the factory. glove box sticker is destroyed so i cant tell what it says but is this the right gear ratio???? ive been getting horrible gas mileage ever since.

Message: could be either 3.21:1 or 3.55:1. i know someone with an '02 CC SXT 3.9/ auto & 3.21. my '00 QC 3.9/ 5spd has 3.55:1. you should have had a tag on the rear also identifying the gear ratio from the factory.

Message: cant say about the rear tag thats long been in the scrap yard. but on a 01 5spd cc sport trim would the 3.55 bolt up to the driveline or owuld i need to modify other parts? also would a higher ratio go in easily like a 3.83?

Message: You can put any ratio you want in as long as its for that model rear end. If youve never done a gear swap my first suggestion would be to get a good service manual and read and make sure you understand and feel comfortable with all the steps because it is a time consuming process and requires a micrometer and pinion depth gauge and torque wrench. If it were my truck I would get rid of the 3.21 for either the 3.55 or 3.90.

Message: If you remove the rear cover, it should have the gear ratio on the ringgear. I have an 88 and when I changed the oil I looked at the gears/carrier and it was on the ringgear. It may be different for the newer ones like your 01 though.
Good Luck

Message: take the VIN from the salvage yard truck and run it through a dealer (i believe they only need the last 8). They can tell you what gear ratio it is.. assuming it's stock.
What about swapping the entire rear? If you have 4x4 make sure you get the same ratio front/rear.

Message: www.car-parts.com is a used parts web-site. It'll find things in your area. I'd go for the whole rear axle w/ a 3.92 LSD-(limited slip diff). You could even swap to a 9.25 rear that way. I just notice the other day a Quad-Cab had disk brakes on the rear, wouldn't that make for a sweet upgrade all in one package.........

Message: sry to be total noob but i can just change the gear ratio without changing the whole rear??? im just a tire tech so ya gotta cut me some slack im still learnin but in either case wouldnt i have to beef up my clutch/flywheel/driveshaft and sh*t? i plan on droppin the 5.9 so i should have to eventually but i can run a steeper gearing with the stock drivetrain???

Message: You seem to have your idea of gearing backwards; referring to 3.83 as higher than 3.55. That is actually lower gearing, when it's numerically higher. I think you mean deeper gearing, not steeper. Steeper, or higher gearing, is lower numerically.
Setting up gearing is precision work. Swapping the rear is a simpler procedure than swapping the gears.

Message: Something that may help understand gearing, what those numbers mean is, take 3:55 for example,
the driveshaft will turn 3.55 turns to make the wheels turn once, while a 6:50 will have the driveshaft turning 6 and 1/2 turns to make the wheels turn once. Bigger the number, higher the engine speed (RPM) than it would for a smaller number. in the example, a truck with 6:50 gears
will have the engine screaming to run the same speed as the 3:55 gears. Assuming, everything else remains the same. tire size, transmission gearing.
Now I'm sure that's as clear as muddy water.
Good Luck
