Subject: check engine light on @130,000 IP: Logged
Message: A few miles before I hit the 130k mark my check engine light came on and has been off and on ever since. Still runs like it did @ 55,000 when I bought it, still gets the same mpg, sounds normal, like it always has. So I'm a bit confused. I've never changed the O2 sensors so I'm thinking of giving them a shot first. Does anybody have any suggestions or previous problems like this.
I live in Denver and we have strict emissions standars and I'm due up next month for a test, never had a problem passing before but I've heard they fail immediately if the check engine light is on.

Message: if the light has been going on and off you may have some stored codes that you should check for first instead of throwing money at it with random new parts.
as ftheabus asked, what yr/engine/trans?

Message: Check for codes frist to do that you need to turn the key on (not to start just on so the lights on the dash come on) on/off/on/off/on leave on and watch the odometer it should display the codes, then when its done it will show either done, or Pdone.
That will help us to help you.

Message: I checked the codes and all I got was the number 12, I looked it up in my book and couldn't find a diagnostic code for 12 but I did find a 1/2, could this be the same thing?

Message: The code 12 means the battery has been disconnected since the last 50 restarts.
Since you are getting that code I think you may have a ground problem, meaning when you shut it off, its trying to clear the codes. I'm not sure though if a 97 will clear the codes like that. My 88 will. And I have a 98 Chrysler that won't clear the codes when you disconnect the battery.
I would check the grounds first from the battery cable (ground) to the small cabe that goes from the batt. to the fender, as well as all other grounds. I know its not much, but it may be a start.
Good Luck

Message: go to auto zone or any parts house that gives free
scans and they will pull the codes and tell you
what is going on
An intermitant or pending code can not be retrived
especialy in the 97 modle rear by doing a manual
code test
