Problem: Idle staying high when stopping (1500 rpm), does not come down when letting off throttle between shifts (1500 rpm), (very annoying)
Situation: A/C was on, was lightly towng (maybe 3,500lbs)
Truck: 2003 Dakota 3.9 5spd, 3.55 gears
Mods: Air intake, Flowmaster, cooler t-stat
I am going to try T-body cleaning, IAC cleaning, and will scan the truck for codes.

JAM, I have an 88 and it uses a thing that helps keep the idle up, and it drove me nuts, what I did was after it got warmed up I unpluged the electrical connector and now it idles fine all the time. I don't know though if yours has that, since its a lot newer than mine is. If it has it, it should be directly in front of the throttle linkage with a 3 or4 plug connector. If you wait until its warm before you unplug it, it will, or should be at low idle speed. In any case, as long as your idle is low it should help keep it from reving up and not coming back down. Just remember, that is suppose to help lower emissions.
Good Luck

I took my truck to work (NAPA Putnam CT) and put it on our scan tool, scanned it and did not find any codes. I researched and found that that IAC is very problematic on dodge dakotas, I replaced it and everything seems to be ok now.

Well today was interesting, the truck has gotton worse, apparently the IAC wasn't the problem. I was towing the trailer again, the same situation as yesterday. Now it is to the point where when i go to shift, the motor wont idle down when i take my foot off the throttle. I called the local chrysler dealer they want $90 just to look at my truck, which is almost out of my price range, seeing as i am a college student making little money. Anyone have any advice?

I checked the throttle linkage and everything is perfectly free. I'm wondering if the TPS could be acting up I'm going to have to reserch how to test it. The thing that has me most confused is this littlerly only happens when I put the truck under a load for an extened period of time, such as pulling my trailer. That to me seems PCM related. I know Chrysler came out with a PCM flash for my truck to correct a simmilar problem, but I am unsure if it will fix my problem.

don't get the flash done! I heard you'll loose a lot of the stuff you like. I have this problem slightly still. It's worse in the winter when it's cold. I replaced the IAC, TPS, IAT and it helped but not completely solved. Also noticed some issues when i as well had a cooler T-stat but returned to factory stat and not as bad. I also had the elbow off my airbox and put it back on and that has helped as well. make sure you get a new throttle body gasket and clean all the old one off without dropping any scrapings into the intake, stuff some rags into the TB holes, torque to factory specs when reinstalling. how is your battery? get it load tested and find out. i have read some posts as well about pcm related problems affecting the IAC motor and idle. Lets hope it's not that. try the simple stuff first.

Thank you, today I checked the PCV, the breather and searched for vac leaks. I found everything to be in good working order. I do have an air intake and the cooler tstat, but both have been installed for many miles. My truck only has 60K on it so I'm am a little supprized to be having problems like this. I guess i'll go to work get a throttle body gasket and pull it off and do some cleaning, I'm also planning on running some fuel injector cleaner. Any more ideas?

I cleaned the throttle body, and when I say clean I don't mean half ass clean. I actually unbolted the throttle body unbolted all of the sensors and made it shine like new, and installed it with a new gasket. God I hope that fixes it. sport02 you got me thinking about my cooler Tstat now, I installed in last fall, and put around 15,000 miles on my truck with it installed. What would make it cause this problem all of a sudden? The cold air intake has been on my truck since it had 19,500 miles on it, I know thats not the problem.
