Message: if the automatic trannys shifts at 2k rpms, and you were to change the shift points to 3k rpms, how would the milage compare to manually shifting the automantic tranny?(1st gear to 3k rpms then 2nd gear to 3krps)
my friend has a durango but its an automatic tranny, would he use more gas manually shifting or changing the shift points? and this isnt an over time question
imagine doing 2 runs, 1 manually shifting, and 1 changing the shift point then changing it back after the run
which run used more gas? im not talking about daily driving, i was looking for a direct comparison, thanks all

Message: i think its a 02 with a 3.9 an auto, same as mine, cept i got an 01 with a manual so i dont know about his shifting
i dont know much about automatic trannys, but i think all hes doing by manually shifting, is just staying in 1st and 2nd gear longer, so i believe it would be the same as changing the shift points, except changing them would just make everything more consistent, but i cant say for sure, just my logic

Message: I am kinda confused on what your talking about and I assume thats because you dont really know what your asking just yet. However to try and answer your question, I assume by manual sifting an automatic transmission you mean moving it in the first and second and drive options of the automatic transmission on the gear shifter (Please correct me if I am wrong or explain in better detail). By him waiting longer for the RPM's to gain higher before he shifts is actually probably wasting more gas, there are tons of variables to determine this tho, I do not recommend doing those kinda shift tho, if your wanna play with the shifting on an automatic transmission, mess with the shifting points on the computer, or get a (or what I believe its called) ratchet shifter. So if I take most of the extra variables out and look at the pure question of which gets better gas mileage, an automatic transmission or an manual transmission, I would argue that the manual transmission would be better gas mileage. And that has been my experience that I have had with the many vehicles that I have owned.
