I just joined this site and it sounds like a lot of good info.

This one is for J and J auto

I have been doing a lot of research on Dodge 3.9 V6's. I just bought a 2002 Quad cab 4X4 Dakota with 65000 miles . Totally bone stock. 3.9 V6, 4sp auto, 3.55 gears, 265/70/16 tires.
I drive all around the Northwest with elevation changes from sea level to 4500 ft. I occasionally pull a 2500 boat also. Not all the time but enough that I would like to have some more power in 1500 to 3000 RPM range. I also don't want to loose the 70 mph at 2000 RPM. Empty I am getting around 19.5 MPG. I towed the boat 550 miles this weekend and had a loaded truck to boot. Maybe 3500 lbs total weight including the boat. Average MPG was 10.5. A lot of the hills were 2nd gear 50 mph and 3400 RPM.
I know that is a lot for a stock V6, but I am thinking if I had about 15 to 20% more hp and foot pounds of torque in the 1500 to 3000 range I would be very pleased with the truck. That is the only negative thing I have to say about the truck. I am not going to sell it because of the less power. I know that it is a stock V6. Reading what you have to say about these motors makes a lot of since and before I start throwing money at it. I thought I would see If you would respond.to this request. Money is an issue but if it is quality and works well I am not afraid to spend money. I will do all the work myself except if there is any machining of parts.
There is a couple of things I don't want to do to the motor. One is open it up if I don't have to. Two is I don't want it to be unreliable. Three I don't want it to be bastardize and that is why I turned to you. Based on what I have read I think you are knowledgeable and competent enough to give some good info.
If you respond to this Great and if you don't I understand. It sound like you get slammed with Questions. (One other thing is I want to get all the MPG I possibly can and I know how to keep my foot out of it)

Thanks

a 4x4 QC auto is enough of a challenge for the 3.9 without loading it down and towing. IMO, a superchips tuner and gears or smaller wheels & tires would be your best options. yes, you'll lose your 2k rpm @ 70 but, the truck will have more power.

Went over the mountain with 2 motorcycles in the back and got 16.2 mpg. That was driving 75 and 80. I guess I will review archives and make a decision on what to do. I would like to do one time. Thanks for all you guys help.

i hope you don't expect to get great mileage driving 75 to 80 mph. these trucks have the aerodynamics of a brick! proper tire inflation, alignment and driving habits are major factors in the quest for better mileage.

not to be a smart a$$ cause there's plenty of them on here, but a V8 would have probly been a better choice though i can't say you'd get the MPG. But if you make the changes you your V6 you probly won't get the MPG either but i don't know cause i've never done it. Gears would probly be most noticeable but you'll loose all the other stuff you like. You just got the truck so it's not like you can take it back and get a V8 but i'm just saying a V8 would have been better for what you need.

Ther are many things you can do

A 46mm fastman or 48mm F&B throttle body will
add 15 to 18hp and 20 25 torque at the wheels
around $250

A cold air intake system around 5hp

The harland sharp 1.7 roller rockers will just
about the same amount around $300

These rocker arms are a bolt in mod no adjusting
needed the valve cover gaskets are alm & silicon
and can be reused very good gaskets there

You also can move the crank sensor and gain 3 to 4
degrees of timing this will add around 5 to 10 hp
just remove remove rubber gromit slot the holes
and move down toward the oil filter right side
pass behind head hard to get to on the G3's

Another option after you improve the intake side
is a superchips tunner using the towing program
this will also raise and firm up your trans
shifting

A low restriction catback will add 5 to 10hp
headers another 10hp

Always improve the intake side first lowering the
back pressure without doing the intake you will
lose low end torque

All sythetic fluids will also help

All these mods not only increase power but also
help gas mileage

I just got 22.4 50 degrees out side raining out
half the trip freeway at 70mph in my 95 4x4

there is 30 hp gain and 40 torque at the wheels
this figuring the least gain

better spark plugs and wires will help napa
mo26 mo28 solid brass incerts and tylor or msd
wires will increase the volts at the plugs

go 1 colder
NGK Vpower $2.40ea FR5
E3 $6.00ea thing 3.64
halo $9each br15

the e3 and halo's are perm gap
the ngk gap at .040 on your obd2

The ngk you will notice instantly more power
smother and better mileage the e3 or halo's
even more

once all this is done than an MSD 6a multi
strike will ad anothe 10hp

with my stock cam I was dynoing aroud 198 RWHP
with my new cam 206

a stock truck is around 120 140rear wheel 200
torque
very easy boltons can get you upto 175 and 250
270 torque a very big improvement over stock

my 4x4 got 17 18mpg stock when its like 70 and
above temps I pull 24 25mpg

start with the
cold air intake
throttle body
1.7 rockers
give it 200 miles to learn this alone may be
enough

The baro sensor in the map sensor only reads when
key is turned on if you change elivation a lot
just pull over shut off and restart this will
solve the elivation prob the higher you get
the less atmispheric pressur and it will lose
power

almost forgot the bosch FMS fuel injectors with
the 4 hole spray over the factory 1 hole wonders
are matched closer holds a tighter air/fuel
ratio better atomization and over all smother
running motor very noticeable mid and top end
power gains more low end torque

Have fun

Larry, the baro also updates when you go WOT not only when on start.
Just an FYI for everyone.

Do the FMS injectors help mpg??

rockchuk probably the best bang for the buck would be going to 4.10 gears.

I am looking at a throttle body on ebay. It is for a 2003 5.9 dakota. I was wondering if the cfm would be to much and do you think the cable attachment would be the same as an 2002 3.9?
