No Codes No clue
This problem has been on going for a few weeks now still no clue on it.
Problem occurs when the truck is cold. So open loop for the ECM so it cant be oxgyen sensor.
But the truck starts runs rough almost with a slight miss. And when going down road the truck does not seem to build power. Just spits and sputters. Like something is holding it back. Once warm truck runs fine but every once and awhile still will not build power

Ive tried taking off the throtle body cleaned it, checked vacume lines, even went to replace the temp sensor for the ECM but according to NAPA there is no TEMP Sensor for the ECM in the 1997 model. Im guessing fuel pressure regulator or pump. Also as one would guess MPG went to $hit

the engine coolant temp (ECT) sensor is on the intake manifold just to the left of the tstat housing. you can check resistance on it. it should read approx. 18k ohms @ 50 degF and decrease to about 600 ohms @ normal operatiing temp. if it reads 0 ohms(shorted)or infniity(open) change it. also, what shape is your battery in? checka and clean all terminals and you might want to have the battery load tested.

evidently your NAPA poeple don't work on any vehicles.

Well unfortanly tried both a new battery and a new temp sensor for the PCM. Battery was about go so i replaced it anyway.
But unfortanly the truck when cold still runs badly same as it did before spits and sputters and when warm runs ok maybe with alittle less power then normal but its hard to tell

Anyone know what i should be looking at next? or what sensors the PCM uses when the truck is still in open loop?

Epyon, have you tired checking the vacuum when its cold? The MAP sensor works off vacuum, just can't think if that would cause the problems you are having or not. Checking the vacuum would be a place to start though. Maybe the timing chain is getting too loose, just guessing on my part though. The thing is a vacuum gauge can point you in the right direction sometimes. Should have at least 16 or more at idle, even cold, and sometimes more at normal operating temp. If its lees than 16, I would check for timing chain strech. the way to do that is pull the dist cap, and have someone turn the crank until the rotor starts turning, then reverse the crank and note how many degrees it takes to make the rotor move again.
I hope this helps.
Good Luck

Thanx for the tip but the timing chain is only about a year old. Ive replaced the plugs, plug wires as well to try and cure this problem still nothing.
If anything the truck will be brand new by the time im done
I should add i noticed today when leaving work it was really bad when i just touched the gas the problem seems to show its self really bad at lower RPMs 650 idle to 2000RPM
650RPM to 1000RPM really bad today.
Im going to go buy some more tools tomorrow. A vacuum gauge and a fuel pressure tester

Have you replaced the distributor cap and rotor button since you have had the truck? If not, I would replace it. This can cause the symtoms you are describing. Which are from the misfire caused by the bad cap and rotor. If it turns out to be that, you may as well as install new plugs while you are at it. It really depends on how long ago you installed the plugs. If it has been only a couple of weeks, you will be fine. If it has been two to three months, replace them.

for some reason i'm thinking you might want to check the TPS. just a hunch i guess. won't hurt to check it.

Since the timing chain is new, I would still check the vacuum, it can cause a lot of problems so a new vacuum gauge is a good idea.
When you find out what is wrong let us know, we may be able to help someone else with the same, or simular problem.
Good Luck

Just an update
Went and picked up a fuel pressure guage but for some odd reason know one had a vacuum gauge
figures.
The fuel pump is charging to 44 or 45 PSI before i start the engine and when running its at about 48PSI so its with in specs. It does bleed down about 5PSI after sitting for 15 mins but according to the repair manual thats within specs so problem still remains unsolved.
I did remove the cap and rotor found both to be in not the best shape they were replaced about 15,000miles ago so tomorrow ill be picking those up and the vacuum gauge i had to get ordered in.
And ill take alot at the TPS sensor anyone know if a dead spot can develope in a TPS sensor? Im guessing they can as it has moving parts.

Yet another update:
TPS .70 at idle and only goes to 3.9 at WOT but that is most likely due to having a V8 TB on there. So the TPS is within the normal range Vacuum is good as well. Truck has never ran so good with all these new parts but still when cold. Runs rough almost like a miss
New Parts:
Cap and rotor
Spark plugs and wires
TPS
PCM temp sensor
Battery

Checked:
Fuel Pressure and bleed down ok
Timing ok
Vacuum ok
Problem remains at low RPM mostly around 900-1200 truck runs with almost a slight miss.
