Message: terminals are fine, everything has been cleaned, great grounds, everything is connected just fine
when i crank, it drops to 5-6volts, so something isnt right, i checked the power to the starter and it was getting the same volts, but when i crank, it drops and chatters/clicks fast
new starter, new cables, good grounds, good enough battery to at least make it crank, switch and relay are fine, i just dont get it

Message: Have you tried to use a jumper wire at the starter? If that works I'm thinking the safety switch is the problem, either neutral safety, or the clutch switch is causing the problem.
Good Luck

P.S. if using a jumper wire works, I would consider using a push button starter switch.
Just an idea

everything reads fine til i try to start, it just the starter just chatters and when i crank i get a low volt reading(about 5.5 volts)

Message: no, but its not the battery because i put in a different one just for testing everything else to rule out the battery
the neutral/safety switch seems like it could be the problem, ill check and test it tomorrow, do they just randomly fail? because unless i bumped it while taking out the starter, ive never messed with it

Message: i take that back, the relay doesnt click when testing it with the battery, like the switch was stuck, so im going to buy a new 1 and try that, as well as check out the park/neutral switch just incase its both

Message: if it were the park/neutral switch you would get no response at all when trying to start it. the clicking means low voltage/ poor connections. have you tried relocating the battery back to it's original location with the original cables?
again did you load test the battery? if your voltage drops to 5 or 6 volts at the starter when trying to crank, if cables and connections and starter are good, it's the battery.

Message: i used 2 different batteries, its not the battery, and the power cable is 1 continuous cable
it drops when i crank, but ive tried different batteries, even a brand new 1
the starter is getting all 12.whatever volts until i crank, then it drops with all the batteries ive tried

Message: then, if you have access to an amprobe, check the current draw of the starter when your trying to start.
what size cable and how many strands in it?

Message: i have a voltmeter that can read ohms as well, and its a 4gauge with tons of little stands, couldnt tell you how many
its JL audio power cable, thats what they gave me and told me would work, its not like the stock with the thick strands and about 15of them total
is that what i need? or doesnt it matter?

Message: had an idea, dont think it matters but im curious
i have about 6foot from the battery a split in the cable, 1 cable comes off the split and goes to the fuse box, the other cable goes from the split to the starter, so esentially i have 3cables in a "Y" pattern, would it make a difference where the split is? like could the split be drawing to much power from the starter?
what i mean is, would it work if i took the cable from the battery and went directly to the starter terminal, then from the starter terminal to the fuse box?

Message: you know the factory split the positive connection at the battery for a reason. what type of splice did you use? with the need for about 175 amps at the starter, it better be some kind of split bolt or soldered connection.
no, you can't use a regular voltmeter to measure that kind of curretn unless you want to see it go up in smoke! an amprobe that would clamp around the positive lead to the starter.

Message: the starter cable isnt split, its the fuse box that was added on, the cable from the battery to the starter is solid, the fusebox cable is spliced in, hard to explain unless you can see it

Message: well i unhooked the connection to the fusebox and ran a set of jumper cables to the fuse wire then to the battery, so the starter got power direct from the battery
the starter didnt chatter like it used to, just got the single battery dead click
so im going to charge the battery or try the new 1, and if thats all it is, ill go buy another length of power cable for the fuse box, and a new battery
