Subject: Squeak in front of engine IP: Logged
Message: Anyone see this problem before?
I have a squeak in the front of my engine that lasts for about 5 minutes after I start the engine in the morning, but then goes away. After that, I don't hear it again until the next morning after it's been sitting all night. Sounds like a squeaky bearing (high pitched, varying in frequency). Been like that for about 6 or 7 months (didn't want to mess with it in the winter), seems to be getting louder as time goes on.
I have changed the water pump, the belt tensioner and the idler pulley. Also rebuilt the alternator (new bearings/brushes). So far hasn't fixed it. Also tried a mechanics stethescope to see if I could pin point where it's coming from - no luck there either.

Message: DakotaDog, I had a simular problem while working on a Ford mini van, it turned out to be the drive belt, in this case I bought a belt a half inch shorter than what it called for and that stopped all the noise. I know it sounds strange, but it worked for me. I too changed the idler bearings, and the Alt. to no avail, so I changed the belt and that cured the problem. One way to see if it is the belt, you could try spraying water on it to see if that stops the squeal, if so its a good chance that's the problem.
Good Luck

Message: What a b&tch that would be if it were just the belt. I changed that also - that was the very first thing I changed - just because it had high mileage. Its been a while, I can't remember which came first, the squeak or the new belt.
I have suspected it could be the belt squeaking, but shrugged that off because the belt is less than a year old.
Thats a good idea - spraying water on it. Will give it a try in the morning if I can remember (kinda groggy in the morning....).

Message: Well I'll be darned. The noise stopped immediately the minute I squirted the belt - then came back 'till I hit it again.
It sure didn't sound anything like the belt slipping. I guess serpentine belts have a different sound than the old "V" belts.
Thanks dakota49!

Message: DakotaDog, I'm glad you found it or at least I hope you did. Like I said I found it that way while working on a Ford mini van. I think some times they strech a little more than the auto adjuster can compensate, that's why I used a belt a half inch shorter, it worked great for me.
Good Luck

P.S. let us know if a new belt fixed it, if you would. Thanks
