Subject: 00 Dakota just quits running IP: Logged
Message: My 2000 Dakota 3.9 2wd 5speed just quits running every so often. It doesn't chug or anything, its like somebody flipped a switch. If I'm rolling, it will usually come back on in a second or two. If I have to crank it, it will usually start in a few tries. Twice, it's taken several minutes of cranking. One friend says fuel pump which I doubt (I can hear it come on b/4 trying to crank) another says bad knock sensor. Any ideas?

Message: Your 3.9 doesn't have knock sensors. I doubt it's the coil if it comes back on in a second or two, but that's one possibility. Maybe a cam or crank sensor problem ?
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: Check for codes, and the wiring, one guy had a problem with his Coolant Temp. semsor for the computer, not the dash gauge. His would run for a while then stop, but his wouldn't restart unless it sat for a while. Just a suggestion.

Message: Could be a crank sensor starting to go. Not common AFAIK on Dakotas, but very common on the 60degree v-6, like 3.3,3.5,3.8. It usually wont leave a code, either. Only way to be sure is to have a labscope or scanner there when it happens.
Otherwise, it's just a guess, but then you can mod your new sensor first so you can adjust your timing!

Message: I had the same problem on my '03 dakota, I ended up having to take it to the dealer to get a new computer, runs great now! and let me tell you, its expensive to get a new computer! plus the labor for them to reprogram it! plus you have to wait the time for them to ship it in because its so expensive they dont keep them in stock.
I forgot what it was but it was a bad driver in the computer.
Oh and if you got the MSD setup make sure you have that diode in line otherwise you will fry the coil driver because the coil driver in the new computer sucks compared to the old one.

Message: the driver that was blown wasnt considered to have anything to do with the emission and the mechanic said that if dodge was going to make the dealership pay for the PCM then i was going to have to pay for the PCM, i tried arguing for an emission problem but to no luck, but it would still suggest you guys trying.

Message: i would beg to differ with your mechanic. the PCM is a component of the emissions systems. but whats done is done i guess.
now i guess we'll see what my shadow thinks about it.

Message: daddio is right on this one. PCM is covered under the 8/80 by the emissions warranty. Go to a real dealer if possible.
