Subject: crunching noise when braking IP: Logged
Message: i've been noticing when i am coming to a stop i'm hearing a crunching sound coming from my front end in the wheels. i think it's the brakes but why would they do that. also if sitting still with brakes on and turn wheels left to right i get the same noise. sounds like something stuck in there but there isn't anything there. Pads are only a year old and are Bendix brand. I was worried maybe ball joints but why would they crunch sitting still while turning wheels? Another problem is also when driving slow (5mph) i hear a squeek, squeek, squeek coming from i think the front wheel and it squeeks with the revolution of the wheel. again, i think something with the brakes and maybe all of it's related. anyone have any ideas beside new brake pads. these are hardly even worn down.

Message: no, not 4x4. it's the brakes. i checked it out tonight. i had a little trouble a few months back with my calipers not sliding on the sliders correctly. turns out they were jammed up and not enough grease on them. i regreased them but apparently too much and grease must have gotten onto the rotors as i was having a lot of pulsating and shimmering in front end due to hard spots. Pulled wheels and rotors were covered with hard spots and glazed to the point you could see all the uneven tracking from the pads on the rotor. Had rotors resurfaced and sanded brakes pads down and cleaned thouroughly. couldn't see getting new brake pads cause these just weren't worn enough. WELL, should have gotten new brake pads cause they're putting hard spots right back onto the rotors and the crunching is the pad on the rotor when it moves around from the caliper and the squeeking is from one spot on the rotor when it passes by the brake pads. I had the feeling i should have gotten new brake pads but i wanted to save money. see what happens when you don't do things the right way? always get new pads when you resurface rotors, pretty much a given!!

Message: Any grease or oil contamination of pads requires replacement. You cannot get the grease out. You are lucky to be alive.

Message: Check your caliper slider pins and make sure they are tight and not stripped out.
