Subject: Spark plug heat shields needed??
IP: Logged

Message:
I was removing my spark plugs and thought that the boot of the wires would be easier to grab on to if the shields were removed.

But then again, the boot is fairly close to the exhaust header. Has anybody out there removed the shields and later wished they didn't?

Relf.

i removed those shields from my '00 3.9 when it had 25k miles on it. now @ 85k, i have no regrets at all about removing them. in fact, mine came out very easily.

Yeah, just use long nose pliers.

Do you notice more or less dirt collecting at the base of the plug with the covers off?

I removed mine...they look MUCH better without them and I also haven't noticed any problems or dirt collecting at the base of the plug wires. HOWEVER...be careful removing them...most of mine came out easily, but I had one stubborn one (passenger side, closest to the front of the truck) that had rusted pretty badly at the base and it took HOURS to get that beast off. Pretty sure I knocked a bit of metal into that cylinder as well...but thankfully it still ran great afterward (well after I rearranged my plug wires...got my firing order wrong the first time...lol).
