Message: my brother bought a car recently, but it is 400 miles away, and not in drivable condition, so i told him i could probably tow it home for him, but i was wondering how my truck was gonna like it. I have a 1999 dodge dakota 3.9 4x4 5 speed with 3.55 gears.i would like to know if it is possible to go on the expressway with it without damaging my engine/trans/clutch/anything else.how fast should my max speed be?the car in tow is an 06 ford fusion with a curb weight of about 3280 pounds.I would be renting a trailer or tow dolly from uhaul(leaning towards the trailer option)how possible is this all?

Message: andrew, I don't think there would be a problem, I would keep the speed down to about 55MPH though. I have done that before myself and above 55 it wanted to get squrily, othe than that I didn't have any trouble.
Good Luck

Message: The key to taming a squirrely trailer is often having enough tongue weight. Should be around 10% of it's weight, a bit more is fine if thetruck's suspension will handle it. You should ignore the "texasTodd" post. The real Texas Todd has a 4.7; that post is someone spoofing him to detract from the site.

Message: I think you should be OK. I know the manual for my '98 3.9 (auto 2wd, though) said I could pull just under 5000lbs (4800?). For an auto you need a tranny cooler - but for a manual you don't. On the other hand, you have to be careful not to burn out your clutch. So don't do it in stop-and-go traffic...
With the tow dolly you'd be 800 lbs lighter, and it should be fine as long as the car in tow is FWD. Anything you rent from uhaul will say not to exceed 45mph anyway.
