Subject: rack bushings IP: Logged
Message: can i replace the rack bushing without disconnecting tie rod ends? I had it aligned not too long ago and would hate to take those tie rod ends off. Also, are these bushings pressed in or can i get them in fairly easy by hand? Anyone???

Message: I also wanted to ask if I should even replace them. I have a fair amount of bump steering and aligned 2x and no problems. They said the rack bushings were fine but i beg to differ. If i grab the UV joint at the bottom of my intermediate shaft and push back and forth i can see some slight movement in the rack. Movement that appears to make the power steering lines look like they move up toward the hood then back toward the ground. Like i said it is slight but i know by the time it gets to the steering wheel it can be a large amount. I'm not sure if there is even supposed to be some movement or none at all. Regardless, bushings are not that expensive.

Message: The rack is held to the frame with just the two bolts you see in the bushings.
call your local dealer and axe the parts guy if they are available.

Message: yes, i know where it is at. question is can i remove the bolts and pull the rack out far enough without having to disconnect the tie rod ends from the spindle?

Message: just disconnecting the tie rods from the spindle shouldn't affect the allignment unless you screw the rod in or out.

Message: just an update. put new bushings in tonight. not that hard of a job. had to pull rack off though. you need to bang those old bushings out and just can't do it when it's still on the truck. re-bleed power steering and re-connect tie rod ends. no change in alignment, also feels much better!!! I think i need a new intermediate shaft though. seemed like excessive flexible play in u-joints and i think is causing my bump steering.
