Message: With gasoline running 3.65 a gallon where I live and LPG running about 2.40 a gallon, I figured it was time to start looking at alternative fuels. Not much out there, but even a little bit of info helps - although I think it could take quite some time to cost justify the conversion kit itself, plus the labor to install it.
The one that I found most interesting was this puppy at PoweredByPropane. Look at them here (cut/paste):
http://www.poweredbypropane.net
- and let's have some comment.
Larry - you strike me as being a "tinker" from way back, and I'd be particularly interested in what you might have to say about propane conversions. Or, any other alternative fuel, for that matter.

Message: tuckerldlow, Propane has a little more octane, and if you talk to anyone who works on propane powered forklifts, I think you find that forklifts hardly ever have serious engine problems, (no carbon) spark plugs seem to last much longer, and rings/pistons don't get a build up of carbon. You may notice your fuel mileage may go down some though because propane while does have a little more octane has less BTU's than Gas, but then everything else the green meanies want us to use also has less BTU's.
I hope this helps,
Good Luck

Message: I have actualy converted a few 318's to LP but
they were carbed and throttle body engines
With the muti port you would need to have the
computer custom flashed to run it
The problem we had with them was valve failure
and some ran so hot they warped the heads the
motors were gone after 100,000 miles
I supose it could be done
heres my theroy set up your own still make your
own 200 proof alcohal and run it LOL
Right now the alcohal plants are eatting 4 million
bushes of corn a month I see no answer there
with all the problems these days
we have also ran the old carbed motors on pure
alcohal all you had to do is jet them bigger and
they ran good remember germany faught a war on
alcohal powered vehicles so there you have it
There is enough oil in our own contry to run us
for over a 100 years why not tap it and stop
making the arabs filthy rich and bankrupting the
USA

Message: I go to many auto auctions and have found that many of Frontier's 97 dakotas run on gas when there cold, and switch to pro. when there up to operating temp....The only problems that I have found with them is a loss of horse power, but if your going more for mpg then you shouldnt worry.

Message: I think it's time to start shying away from the use of petroleum products altogether...while propane is cheaper and more economical, as oil prices continue to rise, propane prices will be doing the same thing...though the effects won't hit you as quickly as they will with gasoline.
On that note...here's a few articles those of you posting in this thread may be interested in...
The Clean Energy Scam -- this one shows how Ethanol use is doing much more harm than good -- http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1725975,00.html
Life After the Oil Crash -- the end of civilization as we know it? -- http://www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net/
I've been doing a lot of thinking lately and I think I've figured out the perfect vehicle as far as fuel costs go...of course, this is all just thoughts with no scientific backing and I don't have the skill to build one of these myself to test it.
The answer, IMO, is a hybrid of electric (by use of batteries) and solar power...right now electric vehicles are VERY cost efficient, however they have one huge drawback. Their range is only approx. 200 miles per charge. This is fine for most drivers' daily commutes, but for vacationing/traveling/business travel, this will not do (most of us cannot afford to take off an extra week of work in order to go on a 1,000 mile trip)...most cars I'm assuming take a MINIMUM of 4-6 hours to charge...and I could be way wrong on that estimate...for all I know it could be closer to 12 hours.
So what I think would be a great idea would be having solar panels placed on the top of the cars which would either allow the car to run completely on solar power during the day, or at the very least, extend the range by 50% or more. If they could make these vehicles able to be powered completely on solar panel while having the batteries there for cloudy/night driving, you're talking PENNIES to drive that same 1,000 mile road trip, and if you must drive at night, you've got a 200 mile range before you gotta stop and recharge.

but the expense is outrages
There is a guy out in cal that is doing elect
swaps tieing the elect motor right to your
exsisting trans mostly pickups batts in box
250 mile range and plenty of power
but we are burning coal and oile to make the
energy to charge them
unless you live near a nuk plant or a hydro dam
does anyone really have the answer to our
energy needs
I like the wind farms and solor I think that is a
step in the right direction
some of these wind generators are just enormas
and make a lot of power, I seen on the news
MSNBC I watch a town of 20,000 people is running
from a wind farm they built and they all pay
just $30 a month elect bill now thats great
Did any of you ever see a serling engine that
runs on just heat they make a small one you
can set on your hot coffee cup and it runs
also some boats have sterling engines to charge
there batteries that run off the sun
maybe another answer if someone could figure
out how to make them more powerful
Geo thermo is another there are towns getting
all there elect and hot water from geo thermal
systems
Who Knows what the future will bring if
wasington quits waisting all our hard earned
tax money on bogus bull $hit maybe we could
solve are energy needs I seen were the spent
4 million to study the dna of the bears at
yellow stone park what kind of crap is that
they need to get real and quit wating money
on this stuff and get to work to solve our
contries problems
They are out of touch and out of control there
3.2 million on hammers for the military what
is that all about do we fight wars
with hammers someone got rich with that one at
our expense

Think the elect bike sounds crazy
Up until just 7 years ago I had a moto bacane
moped I used to use it did 35mph and got 100 to
120 mpg I should have never sold it
I have many friends just a few miles away and
the speed limit on these back roads is 35 so
I used to drive it all over back here
Are you against hearing other peoples ideas sounds
like your name is gorge busch and you only
want to listen to what you want to hear
no one said they were going to sell there truck
and get a horse LOL and free thought is against
the law
If people would listen and talk to one another
more this would be a better world

Message: bottom line mabe not in our time but the world will run out of oil some day and now is the time to start working on other non oil energy.
magnet powered transpertation is one thought.
already we have people that are working on magnet motors to drive cars.
electric cars that have charging systems that charge more electric than they use can be done.
i am convinced that we would have already been useing other types of energy were it not for the greedy oil and rich folks that seem to be controling the world markets as well as all the governments of the world that i believe are in on the big lie.
we have the tec now if they will just let it out.
send people to outer space and pictures from mars, alternitive energy is a snap compaired to that, they just don't want us to have it because they will lose all the money they are getting form oil and other stuff, pisses me off.

Message: To the fellow that asked about burning our own oil.
This is just a couple of thoughts.
1. Shouldnt we burn theirs first?
2. Shouldnt we save it for other uses?
Just a thought.
Ps.
Why did BP drill then try to plug that hole in the gulf.
why is there a tax break for that kind of stupidity.
why not a tax break for leaving the leases undrilled until you actually need them. There are hundreds of holes with old caps that can start leaking at any time. We have massive capped reserves in Kettlemen hills CA.
Don't drill unless you want to pump.
