Subject: 91 dakota transmission

Message:
Hi
I've got a 91 Dakota 3.9 with a dead auto transmission.
I'm wondering what years will work if I go junkyard hunting.
From what I can figure out it's a 42 RH.
I don't care if I have overdrive or not if that helps widen the range of choices.
I have a chance to get an 88 or 89 from a guy and i'm hoping somebody can tell me if this will work.
Thanks

Would be careful if buying any used trans, if you purchase before swapping out I would have it rebuilt or good inspection of it save yourself a headache down the road I wouldnt assume the seller telling you "its been rebuilt or good condition or recently rebuilt" unless its a person you can trust. My old 91' had 157,000 on the original trans and was told these trans's have problems but loook at what mine could be not with yours and like any other truck with an automatic, should be able swap out need to dig into my info i have at hand

Hey J&J, my parents have a neighbor that has an '87 dak with a bad trans. He said that he cannot find a trans anywhere around for that model year, as he was told by the local boneyards that that year had a trans that is different from all the later years. Now, seeing as that truck has the same engine as the 88-early '91, and electronic trannys weren't introduced until '96, shouldn't any tranny from an 88-90 dak work? If not, is there any other options for him?

Hi from the guy who asked the original question

Just wanted to say that J&J was right about this.

I put an 88 trans into the 91 with no problems, other than it was a pain in the butt doing the swap. It bolted right in, no differences in elec. plugs either.

87-91 trannys are interchangeable in the dakotas with the v6's. I'm looking for one also.

I know that a 46RH tranny from a 318 dakota would bolt right up to a v6 fine. I would go hunting for one of those if it were me.

The 36 and 46 RH 88 up will bolt right in using
the flex plate from the 318 or 360

Any 87 to 95 with the 3 wire plug will interchange

front wire O/D
center wire 12 volt on with key
back wire lockup

The sols 200 ohm 180 to 220 is normal

some early 87 did not have the crank sensor mount
this you must also look for

32 RH 42RH same as old 904 A500 6" clutches
36RH 46RH same as old 727 8" clutches
basicly the same trans with the o/d added
a lot of parts will interchange

RH hydrolic gov presure control
RE computer controled gov pressure 96 and up
That is the differance these will not interchange
