Subject: Bad neutral safety sw?

Message:
3-4 times in the last month, I got in my truck, turned the key and nothing happened. I too the gear lever out of park (with truck off) and then back to park again. Then the truck started with no problem. I think the neutral safety switch must be going bad. It doesn't happen often.

Has anyone else had this problem? Are there adjustments in the linkage that would do the same? If so, how do I check the linkage adjustment to be sure before I buy a new safety switch?

stevedak, I think its just the shift linkage, if you just push up on the shifter towards PARK will the engine start? Will it start in Neutral?
To ajust the linkage shfit it into park, you will need to get under the truck there should be an ajustable piece on the rod where it conects to the lever on the trans. clean it off, loosen the set bolt push the trans lever to the rear and tighten the set bolt, check to see if it will now start in PARK or NEUTRAL.
Good Luck

posible switch
or
flat spot on starter

next time it happens just open the door and slam
it shut this will be enough most times to get a
starter with a flat spot to work

posible starter relay
power dist box under hood
swap a/c and starter relay all the same
30 amp relays

some things to check
