Subject: oil pan leak IP: Logged
Message: i have an oil pan gasket leak on my 99 3.9 4x4 5 speed, and i havent looked at it in great detail, but it looks like it would be very hard to put in a new gasket due to lack of spaceto move the oil pan.i was just wondering if anyone has an easy way to do it(or at least the easiest way to do it).

Message: andrew, I have done this before on my own 88 4X4, its not easy, but you have two choices, remove the front drive axle (I did) or raise the engine enough to clear. Now, having done it my self, if I had to do it again, I would remove the front drive axle. The problem with trying to get the engine high enough so you can get the pan off is you will need to remove the motor mounts, a lot of work. If all you need to do is replace the gasket, you might be able to drop the pan enough to get the old gasket out, and put a new one in, the problem I would have with that is, you could get some old gasket in the pan, and not be able to get it out.
I know its not an easy answer, but I have done it before on mine and that was the easiest way I seen to do it, but I did have the experience of pulling the engine before as well, that was why I decided to pull the front drive axle.
Good Luck, and let us know how it works out.
