 Subject: water pump

I have a V6 '04 dakota with 60,000 and my second water pump just went... what's the defect? Anone else seeing this with theirs? How can I make this next one last more that 30,000? Any advice is welcome. Thanks

Where are you getting the replacement pumps? Was it new or rebuilt? There are differences in quality between manufacturers. I would suggest a new OEM quality pump from Napa or just get one from the Dodge dealer. Run a chemical coolant flush and drain the entire coolant system before installing the new pump. Obviously, check the belt and make sure all the pulleys are in line. It's possible you just got a bad pump at the last replacement and it is a coincidence. Check it over the best you can when you remove it.

When I take this one out I will check it over. I will also to a system flush. I hope it was just a fluke because I don't want to keep replacing this thing! At 60,000 miles what else should I expect to fail on this truck?

Make sure you aren't over tightening the belt that can ruin the bearings, and seals pretty fast. First the bearings get hot then the seals fail. It could be that you just got a bad pump to begin with.

dakota49, he doesn't need to worry about tightening the belt. he has an '04 with a serpentine belt and automatic tensioner.
