Subject: Clunk in Rear End IP: Logged
Message: I havent looked to far into this issue, but i always enjoy everyone's advice from this site. I have a 99' 4x4 dak, and noticed recently that when i apply the brakes hard, i hear a clunk coming from (what seems like) the rear end. I didnt think the rear end was too complex so i dont have any clue as to what it could be.
I noticed when in 4 wheel drive in the snow, when i would apply the breaks harder and slide on the snow a bit, i heard a really big clunk then as well. Since the winter has gone, the noise still remains, but only when i need to stop quick. If i slowly apply the brakes, i cant hear it.
Help!
Thanks in Advance!

Message: Simple answer would be rear U-joint. Crawl underneath and wiggle the drive shaft back and forth. Watch where it bolts to rear differential. If that's solid, then we start looking at rear diff, bearing, or brake assembly. Good luck, let us know what you find...

Message: I disagree with 2602, if it was a U joint, every time you step on the gas or let off it would make a klunking sound, not just when you hit the brakes hard.
