Subject: best oil filter? IP: Logged
Message: This past weekend I changed my oil and oil filter and had a talk with the local auto mechanic who does all the work on my truck and found out some interesting news. I've been using fram oil filters on my truck for the past couple years but this past weekend he told me that I was crazy because all fram has in them for a filter is basically a balled up piece of cardboard, which he actually cut one of the filters open and showed me. He said that he only uses wicks filters or hasco(? something began with an h anyway) and I was wondering what filters yall would recommend for use on my truck? thanks for any information

Message: I think your mechanic gave good advice. If you get your filter from NAPA (NAPA Gold), you are buying a Wix filter. There have been a lot of posts on this site about junk Fram filters ( I have my story too). A lot of people on this site swear by Wix. Other stores sell wix filters but I have not found them at the discount stores like Advance or autozone or walmart.
I need to change my oil in the next few days, thanks for the reminder!!

Message: Oreilly's has WIX filters. at least my local store here does. and if you look at the O'reilly brand they are almost identical to the WIX. i've used both and have had no problems.

Message: Thanks for all the advice on the filters. I used one of the Mopar
filters from walmart on this change and to me personally, it actually
feels like there is an improvement in performance (better oil
pressure?). I'm going to wait and see what the oil looks like at the
next change and decide whether I want to keep using the Mopar
filters of change to the wix filters. Thanks again!

Message: i have also tried that filter. seems to work well and looks well constructed. there are only a handful of big oil filter manufacturers that make filters for practically everyone else.

Message: Check out the oil filter study at the Mini Mopar Resource site.
Purolator is one of the better rated filters.
Ford had a TSB about lifter rattle at startup due to the lousy internals of the Frams.

Message: Come on now, do some research. They changed the design some time ago.
http://www.fram.com/products/oilFilters.php
check out the technology links for the various filter models. Specifically check out the extended guard filter. It has synthetic media backed by screen.
And for my Canadian friends, check out the Fram synthetic oil filter.

Message: Fram is definitely not a trusted filter by mechanics, government agencies or commercial fleets. 2 filters are by and far better than anything else available, they are...WIX and Donaldson. I don't doubt that Fram made oil pressures rise, that is because of the lack of restriction, oil filters work on micron ratings, which catches the micro particles created during normal engine wear. Whenever my oil pressure begins to rise I know it's time to change my oil because the bypass valve is activated.

Message: Well Warren, if fram filters are junk. How was I able to get 300k out of my truck by using fram filters and wal-mart oil? I only change my oil about every 15 to 20k miles. So go ahead and keep spreading your Exxon based lies to everyone. You do not need to change your oil and filter every 3k. Using the cheap stuff will last just as long as the "other" stuff.

Message: What's up Todd? I don't use Exxon crap either, not a fan of Exxon. Used Fram for years until the day I decided to open a Fram filter and do a crush test on the inner paper and found nothing. Did the same test with a WIX and saw the crap it was catching. I'm glad you've been lucky with the Fram and WalMart oil, way to go. Just curious? How much compression do you have across all 6 cylinders? I run the Amsoil and a Donaldson filter, for $50 I only change my oil once every 50,000 miles, which is much less than using Fram and Walmart oil every 5000 to 7000 miles. My compression, 151 pounds on every cylinder, that's better than Dodge rates a new 3.9. You might be onto something there Todd. I'll be sure to watch for your newest discoveries.

Message: Fram reg filters the cheap ones are junk
cardboard bypass and check valve they leak causing
dirty oil to flow thru and drain down causing
lifters to tic on cold morning starts
carquest and napa both sell the wix a very good
filter
The Amsoil and K&N filters cost more have a
sythetic filter element and will hold more dirt
these filters is what you should use if you run
sythetic oils 6,000 miles or more
I run the K&N HP2004 and have been for the last
3 years get then local for $9.99 was using the
amsoil but I always had to order them
K&N Royal Purple Oil 6 months or 6,000 miles
is the way I go with 124,000 miles on my 4x4
motor, never have to add oil yet and I rev
it to 5,000rpm all the time 30 40psi at idle
50 60psi when crusing tells me the lower end
is still in perfect shape
This motor is a 92 and was run on pensoil its
first 60,000 miles and changed every 3,000
there is no replacement for good maintainance
all other fluids I use amsoil even the grease
with moly still org ball joints 95 4x4 the idler
arm and pitman arm was replaced at 100,000 but
they had no grease fittings now the moog replaced
ones have them

Message: So I think that I might change to Wics filters next time I change my oil but I was just wondering if anybody knows anything about the Mopar filters and what type of filter element they have and who they are made by, like if they are made for Mopar by puralator, fram, etc, that kind of info. Thanks again for all the above posted info and for any more!

Message: TexasTodd,
you are just showing your stupidity by running your mouth on here. It is a proven fact that fram oil filters are junk. Just last week you posted that you only had a 100k on your truck, now within one week you put a 100k on it. Are you sure that you are not a 12 yr old boy? Maybe it is past your bedtime.

Message: thats not the real texas todd, thats his spammer.
I always run the K&N filter Larry said he uses and mobil 1 fully synthetic 5w30. I change every 5,000 miles. By the way Warren, having more compression than what it is supposed to be is bad. But the 3.9 is supposed to be 150 psi so you're ok. Otherwise it means you've got a problem.

Message: I have 180 pounds of compression on my 1988 3.9, but I did rebuild the engine and had the heads and block milled to make sure they were flat so I gained a little compression there, 17000 miles and doing great.
