Subject: removing the oil pan IP: Logged
Message: I'm changing my oil today and am going to use a engine flush to get rid of the sludge build up and stuff and the bottle says that on really bad engines to remove the pan and clean the screen to make sure you don't suck any particles back through. Just wondering if this is something I can do in my drive way or if I need to take it to a garage or something. I have a 1995 3.9 mag.

Is it 4 wheel drive? I am just about finished installing a new reman engine in my 96 3.9 magnum 4x4....
It will take you the better part of a day to remove the pan if it a 4x4, you will have to lift the engine to get the pan off on either 4x4 or 2x4. Even with the engine raised as high as possible without disconecting the transmition on a 4x4 you may still not have enough room to get the pan off.
Before you do anything check to see if your plenum gasket is broken. Do a vacum test(search on how to do it) This maybe the route cuase of the oil sludge.
It is a huge job getting the pan off you may want to just drop a remanufactured engine in like I did. I got a reman for 1650, new heads, valve gear, .040 over size pistons, bearings, hi-perf tim chain, gasket set and new oil pump for 1650 canadain.

When you add the labor and agrevation of getting the pan off and find sludge 3/4 " deep in your pan the engine is basically history. If you have that much crap in the pan ontop of the lifter retainer plate it will be just as bad and you will loose a lifter and pushrod.
Be prepared for the worst....let us know what you find.

On a 2 wheel it shouldn't be to bad, no front axle or transmition mounts to deal with. You will have to lift the engine until you almost crush the wires and connectors on top of the transmition BE CAREFULL not damage the crank sensor on the back. Then you should have enough room to get the pan off. Reinstalling it without leaks will be
challenge.
If you plan to do a "rebuild" or better yet a remanufactured engine I would wait to pull the pan off, you should be able to get a fair idea of how the engine is from pulling off the rocker cover inspecting for sludge build up, loose rockers etc...accurate oil pressure reading @idle and @2500 and compression test it.
If you are getting oil presure fluctaution at either rpm and not constant pressure your oil sump screen is likely clogged with sludge.

Message: I have my 95 4x4 motor apart waiting for the new
cam its a 92 motor with 124,000 miles still runs
30 to 40 psi at idle 50 60 when driving and the
internal is very clean cam bearings show no
sign of any ware look like they were just instaled
the motor ran reg oil first 70,000 miles I switched to synthetics when I droped it in my 4x4
The org motor was also in good shape pulled out
only to install stroker crank
If the maintainance is done reg oil changes I
have seen some of the V6 motors with 500,000
miles and still running strong they are amazing
little motors and I just fell in love with them
So much so I even installed one in a I/O boat
and its just great water ski and sport boat
the mileage over the throttle body GM V6 that
was in there is like twice the fuel economy and
a lot more power
before you go to all the trouble do a couple
flushes and than change oil a few times at
1000 miles to clean it out the oil has to go
threw the filter before it hits the oil galleys
so your safe there

Message: Most likely its the gasket holding the pan to the block not the pick up tube. try hitting the pan along the bottom edge sideways with a rubber mallet that should knock it lose just don't get carried away with hitting it as you don't want to damage it, just knock it lose. Good luck.

Message: Unless your engine has been abused or the oil never changed you should not have to clean the oil screen. It's a big job and unnecessary. Detergent oils clean the grime off of the inside of the engine normally. If you doubt this pour some oil on your hands when they are really greasy,it will clean them. If you really want to do something change your oil a few times every 500 miles. This will break down the grime and flush it out.
