Subject: Spark plugs IP: Logged
Message: Ok I'm going to be doing a tune up here real soon and I wanted to put the NGK plugs in my truck.
I was wondering which one I need does anyone have a part number? The part numbers I have found are FR5-1 and FR51. I want to go 1 range colder that stock just as recommended but I am not shore exactly which one that is.
Thank you

Message: Ok what the hell? I would have never thought that finding the right plug would be so hard. I do have a way of making things harder that they need to be though.
Here is what I have found
Advanced Auto parts listings for their NGK plugs
NKG FR5-1 part number: 7252
NGK V-power Plug part number: FR51
Jegs list
NGK FR5-1 part number: 739-FR5-1
NGK Spark plugs part number: 739-7252
Which one do I want?

Message: Why order and pay shipping just go to a local
parts store that carries NGK
FR4 stock range
FR5 1 colder
the V power 1 range colder run great you will
notice the diff right away

Message: If I run the FR4 V powers, should I get better gas mileage? I don't care much about increasing performance, just mileage.

Message: If your stock take a look at your plugs if on the
white side drop 1 colder
If nice tan stay with stock range FR4
99% of the trucks run better and get better milage
1 range colder it lowers the cylinder temps
either the 4 or 1 colder 5 will run great and
get better mileage than the champs or autolite
It makes a noticeable diff in power, throttle
response and gas mileage most gain 1mpg or more
1.5 and 2mpg I have seen with the Vpower
A napa mo26 and mo28 solid brass incerts and a
good set of wires like the MSD 8.5 or the taylor
8mm these wires are only 50 ohm resistance per
foot over the stock and other cheap wire sets
are 300ohm cutting the volts to the plugs
Vpower good cap and wires mileage gains of 2mpg
are common increase in the V6 trucks and you
will be very happy you did this 50 to $100
depending on which wires a 2mpg gain for that
is a good deal
The better the spark the more of the charge of
gas in the cyl will be burnt increasing eficiancy
and gas mileage in other words more power from
the same amount of gas
FR4 stock heat
FR5 1 colder
92 to 95 .035
96 up .040
with msd system .055
don't just put them in get a champ round gaper
for $1 and check them before install

Message: Round sparkplug gappers are not accurate for gapping plugs suggest using a wire gap gauge by having a slight drag when gapping plugs I found by comparing the two was not even close when using wire gauge

are only off .001
The real cheap ones are off .003 to .005
you can find them for $1 at most auto stores

Message: Agree with cheap ones still favor wire gapper,Larry think when they machine press these out and to be all the same including champion brand ? same would hold true with wire gappers with the correct thickness wire gauge steel if someone is not like myself maybe to technical pull out an micrometer and measure and compare see what Iam getting at ? but everyone has a favorite tool to use enough my babble........ and why wouldnt engineers put a colder plug to begin with if you get better mileage then hotter heat range understand to withstand fouling from driving condtions any other factors to consider

Message: The hotter plug was only used for emissions
but they pass easily with 1 colder
Your not going to foul a plug very easy in a
multiport injected engine I have run some
V6's 2 ranges colder with absolutly no problems
If you go to a dealer and complain of ping the
first thing there are supose to do is instal
the champ truck plug which is a 1 colder plug
and in the later years this is what the mag
motors came from the factory with
just another enginering blonder
I talk with the mopar technitions in detroit all
the time you would not beleave some of the things
they tell me

Message: to many pencil pushers and mouse clickers and know that you won't foul a plug out give or take a heat range unless you have a fuel issue and know all to well bout these techs nowadays to much book talk but your engine today isnt anything much different than first maybe a few enhancements... and tighter clearances... still beleive in the basics without an laptop telling me how to fix my truck ,but thats how these techs are with there experience they gain, lets get back to old days of picking up an wrench and dont mind a dirty hand, like the saying not broke leave it alone? another one if you didn't get your hands dirty you didn't fix it right get back to it and fix it!!!
