Subject: need new head?? IP: Logged
Message: Okay, a few years ago I had broke a sparkplug off in the head. Getting that out was fun..anyway, I'm thinkin that the threads are pretty screwed up from that situation and it's causing a leak around the plug, obviously not good. The reason I think this because I remember the last time I changed plugs it was hard to screw the plug in past a certain point, and I've been getting a cylinder misfire code for the cylinder ocassionaly.
So, my real question is..
Can I just retap the head and put in helicoils??
OR should I just go get another head?

Message: i don't see wy you couldn't re-tap the hole but, you'd have to go to the next size larger plug. i.e.- if the plug thread now is 14mm you may have to go to 15mm.
i can't see a heli-coil working in there.

Message: go here:
http://www.ngk.com/sparkplug411.asp
scroll down to the bottom of the page. lower left is a link under part numbering system. looks like you might have to go to 18mm.

Message: You may want to try carefully applying some JB-weld to the thread hole, then dril and tap it back to original size. I would strongly suggest removeing the head.
I have used this product to repair large bore diesel engine with head gasket leak damge between cylinders and worked great.
check out their website

Message: hm, no sh*t? never even thought of that..that's a good idea! too bad I would have to take the head off but hell, guess I could get the plenum gasket done too while I'm in there. I don't know how bad that is but I'm sure it's due. I still don't know if that's the problem, been raining the last couple days and havnt had the chance to pull the plug and take a closer look at everything. thanks for the advice Stoneslinger

Message: I just checked out that site for the hell of it and it said it's not recommended for temps above 500 degrees (including engine components). think that will still be ok as far as being used for threads? I know you said it worked on diesel engines but just gotta be sure, you know?

Message: Well, I just changed my plugs and it turns out the threads are good! Im an idioit, it was the heatshield that was rubbing on the spark plug socket making it hard to pull out. after a little workmenship, it's good to go! no problems!

Message: The head could be repaired using a thread incert
not a heli coil but you would still have to pull
the head
Get a better socket to use sounds like one I had
it was off center and would do that and it was
a craftsman socket took me an hour to explane to
sears what was wrong to get a new one for free
LOL some people are just lost at times LOL
