i remember reading that if you eliminate the fan clutch, youll gain about 15-20hp and 20flbs torque and can get about 2-3better mpg, now these numbers are probably best case senario, but do they mean if u eliminate the fan clutch and put in an addition electric fan? or just dissconnect it and your good to go? i wanna try it, but i dont wanna do all the work and then find out i wont get the hp gains and mpg advantages until i buy a new fan, if its free power, im all for it, can sum1 clear this up for me? id like to try and remove it monday if i can get an answer from you guys, thanks a ton, this site is amazing

what yr is your truck. '00 and up had both the clutch fan and an aux electric fan. i removed the clutch fan on mine about 3 yrs ago. haven't noticed a "real" gain in mileage. i think hp gain might be more in the 5 hp range.

i have an 01, and im not expecting huge gains, but its better than nothing, ill just watch the temp gauge a little more carefully for awhile to notice if its in danger

anyone have a write up on how to do it or something? i looked in the haynes manual, and im not sure what to look under for removing the fan clutch and what to do with the belt, its probably in there, but im not sure what to look under, any help is appreciated

ok i think i figured out how to do all of this, the only part that still puzzles me is if the nut holding the clutch fan is reverse threaded or not? i guess i dont need to mess with the belt or anything, just remove the nut and clutch and im done, but i dont wanna strip or break anything, im trying to have the ability to turn the truck back to stock if i ever sell it, so i dont wanna bust anything

clutch fan nut/bolt reverse threaded yes or no? thanks

if your truck doesn't come with an electric fan from the factory, then you will definitely want to install at least one. I recently got done swapping engines in my '96, and the fan and clutch were not on the engine that I put in. I had the fan and clutch from the old engine, but it was not wanting to be removed from the old water pump, so I just went to a junkyard, spent about 10 minutes (if that) and got two fans out of a 3rd gen ford taurus (the body style with the circular headlights and very round bodies). Other fans will of course work, but these were very easy to remove and install, and both of them fit pretty easily on the radiator. I got the two fans, mounts, and wiring harness for $20. As I said, they were very simple to install and wire up, and the engine (so far) has yet to get to the halfway point on the temp gauge. Before I installed the fans, It took a VERY short amount of time for the gauge to go up,up,up. One fan would probably have been sufficient, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

if memory serves me, it's right handed. grab the pulley with something, put a big wrench on that nut and give it a good whack with a hammer. it'll come right off. the factory electric fan come on automatically at 2 times:

1) demand for ac with engine temp above 130 degF
2) engine temp @ 210 degF

thanks guys, it does have an electric fan since its an 01, i just didnt know if id need a nother 1 in addition to the stock electric fan

but with the nut, what do u mean right handed, does it come off like a normal nut, or spin the opposite direction?

im still confused on what u mean by right handed

and a side note, i have a hood scoop and hood vents so the engine bay is naturally cooler than stock, so im not to worried about it over heating, but i will still watch it carefully for the next few weeks

Yep you dont need the tool just get 1 7/8ths wrench and a big friggin hammer and start wrappin on it. Itll come off eventually. No need to worry about tightness putting it back on either as the engine will self tighten the nut.

im not worried about tightening it, i might even leave the nut off, but im worried about loosening it, i read some vehicles have it reverse threaded, and i dont wanna b turing it n beating it the wrong way, ill just screw up the nut and round it, and make more work 4 myself in the end

normal thread or reverse thread?

it's "normal" righthand thread. you can't put the nut back on. it's part of the clutch fan. you don't need it. the pulley is pressed on to the waterpump shaft.

Hi i have a 2001 dodge dakota with a 3.9 v6. how do i find out if my truck has an aux electric fan or not? I went to orliey auto parts and bought a 14 inch hayden electric fan that flows 1250 cfm of air. Can i just take my factory clutch fan off and use the auz electric fan, or would u use the hayden ?

if you can't open the hood and look for the fan inside the shroud just start the truck and put the a/c on max cold. the fan should turn on. but, if your trucks an '01 you have the fan.

as far as using the hayden fan you bought, thats entirely up to you. i have been running with just the stock for about 3 yrs now.

its right on the radiator, u have one, but lean way in2 the engine bay and look under the shroud towards the radiator, ull see it, and just for future reference, its not a 1 7/8 nut, its a 1.5" nut

i have an 01 v6 3.9 and i have an electric, as do you, dont worry

and if you guys want to cover up those threads on that waterpump pulley with a nice looking billet piece, check out dakotausa.com. there is a guy there that makes some in different styles for 30 bucks.

and i add no problems whatsoever even idling in the hot South Louisiana summer traffic.

you don't have to take my word for it.
