Subject: installing tachometer IP: Logged
Message: i tried installing a tach into my 1987 3.9 v6 dakota i had it wired up to the coil but was getting nothing, so i tested it with a tester, i had volts and dwell but no rpms ???
anybody have a idea?

Message: How did you wire it to the coil? Positive or negative terminal?

Message: negative side of coil and attach the positive lead from tach then should work

Message: All the tachs I have seen have four wires a red positive 12 volt switched source, a white wire that gets tied to you dash lights, a green signal wire that gets tied to the negative on the coil, and a black that goes to ground. Then there is also usually a dip switch on the tach to select the number of cylinders. I would make sure you have a good ground then check you other connections.

Message: well the tach i have has 5 wires white, black, green, red and a orange, its a trisco tach
right now not worried about the tach, wondering why my tester did show any rpms
