Message: Ok,
My catalytic converter went bed. Not the 2 pre-cats but the 3rd big cat. I Cut it off; didn't have much of the stuff in order to fix it (I just moved to a new house, my tools are at my old house). Now I have about 4 foot flames under my truck when I let off the gas. Back Fires...
I will be fixing my truck tomorrow; what would be the best way to do it? I am not buying a new 3rd cat; I do not have emmissions in my county. I guess a straight pipe back?
Any ideas are appreciated; currently the truck runs well, but I will be pulled over sooner or later.

Message: you're really better off buying an aftermarket converter than not having one at all. you could probably find one for 70-100 bucks. how do you know it went bad? and dpeending on year and mileage it could be covered ubder the federal emissions warranty which is usually 8yrs/80k miles.

Message: It went bad because I had no power past 2k rpms. I could not drive over 45mph; I wasn't too worried about it until one day I couldnt go over 10mph. I only live like 5 miles away from work, so 45mph wasn't too bad.
I then changed the spark plugs + Cap and rotor. That didnt fix it, so I decided to cut off the cat. As soon as I cut the cat off, I gained immediate power back. I could rev to 5500 again.
I don't need a cat where I live. There are no emmissions laws. I think I might go with a straight pipe.

Message: "I don't need a cat where I live. There are no emmissions laws." If you live in the US, there are federal emissions laws that govern this, even if your county does no testing. It's still illegal to remove or tamper with any emissions control. So you can still be cited for not having a catcon, if the cops so choose. And if you sell it, you may be required to pay to reinstall it for the new owner at your expense. Why not just fix it?

Message: Because I am not buying a new cat. It will just go up again. I am not worried about getting a ticket for it, I know cops.
It's a 2002 3.9 5 speed. Not much mods, v8 tb, jet chip (I know it sucks, but I bought it), homebrew CAI, ran down the injectors and intake manifold with a dremel.
I will never be able to sell the truck...Ball joints went bad, 3 transmissions, a 4x4 unit, driveshaft came out while driving, bad cat (twice), and I am sure something else has gone wrong.
Nobody will buy this truck, All the problems started when the balljoints went up, I think it knocked the tranny out of alignment when it hit the pavement and the dealership didn't fix it right. So I am at the point of doing all the work very CHEAPLY, as I am not ever going to get my money back out of the truck. It will just be a farm truck until I'm 90 years old.
I am thinking of just a straight pipe with 2 glasspacks, but I think I will have no low end because of no back pressure. Should I try to either gut the cat and clamp it back on, or run 2 straight pipes to a Y into 1 glasspack? Glasspack because it's cheap, $16 bucks.

Message: There is a factory recall on the upper ball joints. Dodge should also cover any damage as a result of bad ball joints.

Message: Yeah, I know. I've paid my $100 deductible for the ball joints, had a guy from michigan come out and give me a check for $2500 for my damaged rims.
I don't care about the ball joints, please talk about my catalytic converter.

Message: if your set on not buying a new cat, at least gut the one you have and put it back on. i would stay away from the glasspacks and buy the cheapy cherry bomb super turbo muffler. they're less than 20 bucks @ A/Z. it will help you keep some of that low end grunt.

Message: ?? If your truck is such a self-described POS, why do you even care how it runs? Why are you putting so much money into mods and ignoring the basic items?

Message: For not much more than a splice-in universal type converter you can buy the OEM style replacement.
I just replaced the one on my 92, entire pipe from the y-pipe to the extension before the muffler was $120.

Message: I bought all the parts to fix my truck for $16 dollars. I will install them tomorrow and let everybody know how it goes.
Guys, you need to be more positive and not negative. Thanks for your input.
Larry, that website did not have a cat for an 02 dakota.

Message: Joe - telling people they need to be more positive is a negative comment, so maybe you should take your own advice ? While I don't personally have a problem with anyone pulling a cat, I can understand why others may want to warn you of possible repurcussions. Perhaps you should be more apreciative of the advice you got, whether you agree with it or not. Taking the realistic view is often more important than that positive or negative label you want to try to put on an idea.
