Message: Still trying to track down my rattling V6.
Symptoms are rattling (deeper sound than pinging) when on very light throttle over about 2,000rpm. It does not do it when the engine is stone cold, oil changes don't seem to affect it.
I've just changed the timing chain & added the tensioner, no different although it was slack as hell.
I was going to check the big ends but it looks like the oil pan won't come off without a load of work to lift the engine or remove the front end.
Any suggestions ?

Message: I think it is pinging, because you said it "doesn't do it when cold" when its cold its running a little bit rich is why its not pinging, of course this is just my opinion. Try using a little higher octane gas and see what happens then. Also what year is your truck??
Another thing is, if the rods are a little loose it may not rattle because the oil would be a little thicker, so if you were to use say 20W50 oil it may not rattle either.
I know I'm not much help, so all I can say is good luck

Message: i agree with dakota49. what you describe sounds like ping and as prone as these engines are to it thats where i'd start. pull the plugs and take a look at them. you'd be surprised how much info you can get from them. my truck does the exact same thing when i run Shell gas in it. don't know why but that the only one it doesn't like.

Message: Thanks for the suggestions, I thought of the oil & have tried throwing in 'high mileage' additives which made no difference, I am guessing that should have a similar affect to the 20w50 oil?
It does sound a bit more mechanical than pinging i've heard before, what about the intake manifold gasket, what are the symptoms if that ?
Is there any point in checking the timing (I'm thinking it may highlight a problem with a sensor or something that controls the ignition timing). Does anyone have any figures for igntion timing at idle and at say over 3000rpm ?
Sorry to run on but I don't know if this thing is causing itself damage.

Message: Sorry, should have said I checked the plugs and they all looked good, gaps and colour were as they should be.
Compression test was a bit low but they were all the same.

Message: A leaking intake gasket can cause a lean condition which would cause pinging, especially if it's the pan under the intake. Easy way to check is look through the throttle body in the corners for excessive oil puddling also you can put some water in a spray bottle and spray all around the intake manifold and listen for the idle to change, if it does you have a leak. Dont use starting fluid because if you have a plug wire arcing it will ignite the fluid (been there done that its funny now, but was then)

Message: I checked inside the intake & it does look a bit black but not too oily, I also checked the crankcase pressure as suggested on a link to a TSB for the intake gasket, it did not show any vacuum in the crankcase so that should apparantely be OK.
HOw hard is it to drop the oil pan and check the big ends? It looks like the pan won't clear the front axle.

Message: mozzer, do you have that link to the TSB about checking the pan gskt? Jimmy9190 is worried about his pan gskt being bad.

Message: OK, if I disconnect one of the lug leads the rattle goes away, does this indicate a con rod big end bearing or the small end bearing at the piston ? Or something else entirely ?
Please help and let me know how much of a job it is dropping the sump pan on a 4wd.
Thanks
