thinkin about relocating the battery to make some room in the engine bay, now i know how to do it, and which gauge wires to use, and where i want to put it, what i dont know is where to run the wires?

i wanna move the battery to the bed upfront driver side, so pretty much 3' behind the driver seat

do i run the wires under the undercarage? but tight so they dont drag or what? id like to do this this weekend so please reply asap

I have an SLT club cab and I am thinking about removing my back seat and making a box to put the battery and an MSD ignition and some other stuff, qt of oil and what not in.
I would run the cables underneath and mount them inside the frame channel on some kind of rubber hangers so they don’t rub through on anything and be sure to keep them a good distance from the exhaust.

it may not be a good idea to moutn the battery in the passenger compartment. fumes and what not. also have you ever seen a battery that self destructed before? i wouldn't want it in the cab with me.

Last I knew, the bed was not part of the passenger compartment.

the bed isnt part of the cab, but bedog8 was gonna relocate the battery to the cab, by removing the back seat and placing it there

I think the bed would be ok, but I'm not sure why he wants to put it there, but I would run the cables (positive) along the inside frame rail to the starter and the ground to the frame rail and just ground it there, but you would need to be sure to have a few good ground cables from the frame to the cab/bed/engine its very important to have good grounds to and from the battery to all the rest of the body.
Good Luck

i understand grounding it to the frame, but why the bed and cab and engine as well? wouldnt the frame rail be enough with a 4gauge grounding wire?

No. There's enough poor electrical contact with rubber engine and body mounts that everything needs to be tied together with electrical wire. And since the positive cable run will be so long now, its wire size must increase by several gauges, depending on distance.

i thought it over last night, and it would be saver to ground all parts, im assuming i could use the same grounding points as the factory does to ground everything, just with different wire

i was moving it exactally 8 foot backwards in2 the bed, and was told 4gauge power cable would work, and since im broke and have some, im probably going to go with that,or get welding cable if i can get it cheap

and then ground with a 4gauge ground cable, then to the engine n body parts with an 8gauge grounding cable

Hello all

Yes I have seen a battery self destruct and you are right that is not good at all but I have only seen military and industrial batteries have a meltdown never a civilian battery and newer batteries are sealed so there is no fumes or anything. Personally I am not that concerned about a battery meltdown or fumes from a newer battery but that does not mean that I would not plain for it.

Relocating it behind the passenger seat was just a thought that I had not fully investigated and yes I know I would have to vent the battery not to mention it would be in its own box.

The bed is a good place to put a battery if you don’t mind giving up the bed space I use my bed all the time and did not want to give up the space so I thought about putting it in behind the passenger seat where the back seat is now. I don’t hardly ever use the back seat. But like I said it is just a thought.

Thank you

i thought it was a good idea too at 1st, but i couldnt do it anyways since i dont have a backseat, short cab

now the problems im having is finding out how to mount grounds to the cab, engine, and bed, i havent gotten under the truck and looked, so im not sure if factory mounts it to all those places as well and id just need to swap wires, or if they factory just grounds the battery to the engine bay and thats it, i looked in the manual and found just how to disconnect the batteries, but nothing about where its grounded to on the truck, any1 know?

now if you guys want to use something like an Optima sealed battery, you can mount those things upside down if you need. you could build a box attached to one of the frame rails and mount it on it's side anywhere on the chassis where room permits.

There should be a ground on the engine near the starter (the starter should be connected to this ground) there should also be one the fire wall ( I don’t know exactly where) as for the bed I have no idea, but you might be able to remove one of the bolts that holds the bed down (from underneath) and clean it and the frame up real good and slip your grounding strap over it and bolt it back in to place.
Just an idea : )

thanks bedog8, ill find sumwhere on the bed to mount a ground, i wasnt worried about that, i could drill a new hole if needed, the cab and engine were what worried me since i wasnt gonna drill any new holes

will 8gauge be enough for grounding the engine/bed/cab if i use a 4gauge ground to the frame rail to a distribution block then 8gauge grounds to the engine, bed, and cab?

i also read i need a cut off switch, is that the law? could i use a heavy duty switch from a hardware store and mount it on the rear wheel well so its not noticable? or is a switch even necessary? im broke so every penny i save is worth it 2 me

" have only seen military and industrial batteries have a meltdown never a civilian battery and newer batteries are sealed so there is no fumes or anything." I've seen a civilian battery vent forcefully when it suddenly shorted on me while driving, with no warning. Brown acid fumes were steaming out. And even sealed batteries can vent under pressure. There is always a danger of hydrogen gas, and sulfur fumes.

Nice info thank you

I would not put a battery in the back of the cab unless I was sure it was safe and like I said at the begging of this thread it was just an idea that had not been fully investigated.
There are a few things I am not willing to take a risk with and exploding sulfuric acid all over me is one of them.
Thank you for the info.
I will probably not put the battery in the back of the cab, It was just an Idea any was.

a disconnect switch rated for that many amps(approx. 1000) is gonna be expensive.
