Subject: Exhaust Manifold Leak IP: Logged
Message: I think I need to replace my exhaust manifold gasket on my 99 dak. Has anyone done this? If so are there any special tips that the Haynes manual doesn't cover? How complicated is it of a job? I mean, how much of the engine needs to be taken apart?
All help would be appreciated.
BTW...since I plan to do this in the spring, I'm already hitting the bolts every so often with penetrating oil to free up the rust.
Thanks,
Olindo.

Message: The seal is a machined surface no gasket
you may get a broken bolt or 2 happens all the
time when headers are instaled
sure its not the flared flange on the y-pipe a
leak at the head is very rare

Message: Larry...when I first start the engine I can hear the pulsing exhaust sound...then after truck warms up I don't hear it anymore. Does that sound more like a bolt issue or the y-pipe issue?
Thanks,

Message: Check all the pipes where they go togather you
will see black where it leaks
I have that on my 4x4 at the converter the pipe
is puched on 3" it leaks and tics when cold but
goes away as soon as it warms up this pipe was
hit on with a 2x4 and hammer and clamped and it
still does that
It happens something like that I myself would not
worrie about it unless you smell exhaust in the
cab than I would do something about it
Yes this is what it sounds like to me not the
flange at the head
1 way to find this also is to start up hold a rag
over tail pipe and see where its leaking when cold
dont hold to long it will get hot and have
someone look and listen sometimes they are hard
to find
I would weld mine but than if I ever want to get
it apart its cutting but I can see where mine is
about 2 min and it stops
don't ya just hate those leaks like that

Message: Yeah...its annoying. My issue sounds exactly like what you've described. I'll check it out when it gets warmer out. Thanks Larry.
