Subject: abs and brake lights on IP: Logged
Message: I just had both lights (ABS and BRAKE) come on, and my Speed Odm only works from 30MPH and above. took to dealer ship except they were talking 100 bucks to run diagnostics and told me it could be up wards of 285 dollars to replace speed sensor and if it is the abs mod it could be almost 600. telling me worst case 800 to a 1,000 to fix problem. I need help ( 99 dodge dakota 3.9 v6 4x4)
the codes that I had at the brake shop were
35 rear sensor circuit failure
37 rear sensor sig erratic
65 power relay open
78 base brake system incident
told 65 and 78 are abs mod could fix all or could need speed senseor for 35 and 37
any tips not much experiance with cars but I can change oil, preforme tune-up, even fix a water pump. I don't know were to look or how to get to these items. I would appreciate the help

Message: ABS, Brake Light on and speedo not working below 30mph are a sure sign that the RWSS(rear wheel speed sensor) in the rear diff has gone out. those symptoms have been posted on here about a thousand times. you would think the dodge tech would know that huh? 25-35 bucks for the sensor and about 1/2 to 1 hour of you time and you'll be done.
then stay away from that dealer.

Message: I agree dealer bad news
replace sensor and reset the ABS by disconecting
batt hold key to start for 1 min than shut off
connect batt and away you go
The ABS is a seporat computer and can only be
reset by a hard reset or dealer DRB scanner

Message: Same symptoms got my dak99 3.9L Auto. Like 6 months ago. I went on line and found this forum that help me alot!... Just took me less than 30mins to change it myself. I got the rear sensor @ the dealer, paid $65.00 bucks (just to get the original parts) I disconnected the battery for 1 min and then put back on it. I started my truck and the ABS and BRAKE lights went off. The problem was gone! thanks to this website and thanks to all the dakotas owners that posted thier experiences on this forum.

Message: crawl under the truck and follow the drive shaft all the way to the back. the driveshaft connects to the differential, big round looking case-like structure. on the top part of that look for some electrical wires that plug into something. that is the sensor you have to remove and replace.

Message: I just replaced the RWSS on my '99 today and it seems like the ticking and constant pulse in the pedal is gone but the ABS light still comes on at 55mph... is this because I didn't reset the ABS computer itself?

Message: There's a nut and bolt you have to take off to get to it... you can see where the sensor plugs in right? I know it doesn't look like the new part but it is. Take off the top nut that holds the brake lines against the rear, then take off the bolt you can get to underneath them, this holds the sensor in place. Now you'll need to pry the sensor out of its hole, be careful not to snap it off... I thought I was going to the whole time but it came out eventually, just be gentle with it. the new sensor will take some pressure to drop in and I found the easiest way is to just put the bold back in and that will squeeze it into the hole. Again be gentle because that bolt doesnt apply pressure exactly where you want it and you dont want to snap your new sensor.
Hope that helps,

Message: By the way, i pulled the fuse and replaced it but no luck... still having the same issue I'm guessing I'm just not resetting it right. Or did you mean to pull the fuse and leave it out? That will fix the brake pulsing problem but I won't have a speedometer (haven't tried it but that makes sense, right?) Plus the lights will just be on constantly then, but that isn't really my concern. If I can disable the ABS without losing my speedometer that would be great, cause ABS is for morons who can't think to pump their own brakes anyway...

Message: Take the battery cables off and touch togather leaving lights turned on or turn ignition over and hold while cables are off if that doesn't do it you changed wrong sensor there are two that can cause the problem RWSS or ABS sensor
