Subject: o2 sensor, different harness??
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 98 slt and my rear o2 sensor harness is female...and so is every single rear o2 sensor ive seen. possible to have a different harness for some reason?

anybody think it's possible to put long pins inside of the connectors so they attach? I don't remember if the connector shape is match for the o2 sensor I bought, I'll have to check that when the ground is a little drier.

Any suggestions? any help appreciated, thanks in advance.

check ngk.com for the right sensor

4 wires

1 signal
2 ASD power or batt volts with key
3 ground
4 sensor ground to computer

Thats what they have for wireing

I called their tech support and they didn't know what to tell me. They just said it was weird and that all the downstream sensors for the dakota are female.

I think I see what youre sayin, maybe they have an o2 with a male connector for a different vehicle with the same connector shape. I'll try to dig it up. I wonder if they will take back the sensor I bought. I took it out of the bag but it's never been installed.

I've been doin a search on NGK.com and in 2001 that's when the harness connector changed to a square shape. mine is the round 4wire kind. ive looked up other dodge vehicles and havnt seen a single o2 sensor with male pins. getting a little aggravating.

I went to radio shack and bought some pins for a computer connector. they're a little smaller then the o2 sensor holes. they touch but they are not snug. Will this still work if I somehow modified 2 pins together make one long pin?

I pulled up an old post I started last year and Larry you said you used a big paper clip as pins before, think that will work better since I wouldn't have to modify 2 pins into 1?

theres a lot of snow on the ground right now and the garage is full of bikes and 4wheelers, so I havn't had the chance to look at the downstream connector. any more advice is welcome, thanks

I had the same problem, I cut the old ends off, and put em on the new ones with some shrink wrap butt connectors, all is good.

Yes just cut old plug off and solder to new sensor
be sure you stager the cuts so you don't end up
with a big blob in 1 spot and heat shrink
1" back 1 wire
2" back next wire
3" back so on
4" back so on
this will move all conections away from each other

What I used was a bigger paper clip fit good just
soldered wires to the pins cut from clip and used
them

I do this to make plugs for various things
because I refuse to cut any factory wire harnas
to me that is a no no

I am talking about like afteer market tunners
like split sec smt6 ect

This way if it ever was to fail you can reconect
to stock in just a few min.

thanks larry, I'll probably give that a shot and see how the fit. that way I wont have to mess with those little pins I bought that aren't long enough to connect to females.
