Subject: Crazy oil pressure need some Help IP: Logged
Message: 1997 Dodge Dakota 3.9V6 5 Speed 4x4 RC 85,000Miles
Well im looking for some help on this one. About a month again i switched out the oil pressure sending unit cause the old one broke in half and i went and got a replacement from napa. Everything was fine up untill a few days ago. Coming back from work my oil pressure started going down well driving at 2000RPMs to about a 1/4 from 3/4 and when i pulled over and as soon as i let off the gas it started going back up. same thing tonight coming back from work goes down after about 20 mins of straight driving at 2000RPMS and then let off the gas and comes back up. I should add i did an oil change with Castrol syth oil last week and a crapy FRAM filter. Im going to change the filter tomorrow but would like anyones thoughts about this problem thank you.

Message: possibly something blocking the hole in the gauge when pressure is up, acting like a flapper. More pressure from the engine, less gets to the gauge, release the pressure, the more oil can get to the gauge....
sounds weird, but that's the first thing that came to my mind..
You didn't get any thread tape past the threads by chance?

Message: Could be the filter too. I switched from Purolator to the Advance Auto Parts filter on my lat oil change and it caused my oil pressure gauge to read less pressure at cruising speeds. The filter has better flow than the Purolator and better flow causes less oil pressure internally, so less reads out on the gauge.
Maybe you got a bad sending unit and maybe NAPA will swap it out for you. Good luck.

Message: Epyon, I had the very same thing happen to mine last weekend and I removed the plug connector from the sending unit and sprayed it down with brake parts cleaner and its been working fine ever since, I know it sounds "too easy" but the first thing I checked was the oil.
It worked for me.
Good Luck

Message: Thanks Dakota49. I am going to clean the connector on my oil pressure sensor too. I don't know if has anything to do with my own lower pressure reading, but it sure couldn't hurt to try. I may just switch back to the Purolator filters too so the gauge will read like it should.
Thanks

Message: I'm using Mopar oil filter for a 318/5.2 it holds more oil, and I am using Castroil 10W30 full synthetic, I noticed when I first changed the oil my oil pressure gauge went past the 1/2 way mark and it pretty much stays there now, when it gets up to temp it will drop to the 1/2 way mark at idle, but goes back up when I rev it up to 1500 RPM. I like you was conserned when my gauge started dropping at 2000RPM, and then when it would idle it came back up some then dropped again, very erratic. I was glad it was just the plug in connector, I only have 17000 miles on it since I rebuilt the engine though.
Good Luck

Message: Thanks for the info on the plug connector. Im going to install a manual oil guage tomorrow and ill also clean that plug connector.
So far ive tried switching out the crappy Fram filter and i pulled off the oil pressure sending unit to make sure nothing was blocking the port. But to my disappointment its still doing its crazy tricks so ill update you guys on what it is when i know. Im almost positive its a bad sending unit now or at least something to do with that sending unit

Message: Epyon, I agree it can be a bad sending unit. I doubt if its the oil pump.

Message: Epyon, I was doing some thinking and if you need to get into the engine, it could be the oil pressure relief valve is sticking. The only thing is with just 85,000 miles I wouldn't think it would be the pressure relief valve. I hope its something easy though.
Good Luck

Message: Update:
Well since installing a manual oil gauge in the truck which looks ungly and im hoping to remove it soon.
The elect gauge hasnt acted crazy
I believe the wiring going to the gauge or the plug connector was the problem. As for pump the oil pump is clearly fine as its running 25PSI at idle (minium 6PSI) and 72PSI at 3000RPM(30PSI minium)
so must be a bad connector or sending unit thank you for everyones help in this matter nice to know the engine isnt going to blow anytime soon
Now that ive said all this the problem will be back haha

Message: Just an update here. I put a Purolator Premium Plus oil filter on today, topped it off with about 3/4 quart of Maxlife and went for a drive. My oil pressure is back to normal readings now now, even at 75 mph/2000 rpm on the interstate. Glad you got yours fixed too Epyon.
