Hi all, I'm having troubles with my dakota...it's a 94 sport, 3.9 automatic 2 wheel drive.

so, when i start the truck, it shimmies n shakes, if you give it gas while still in park, it has a high pitched whine that accelerates and goes down with the engine....can't figure it out....when you drive, it seems to be sluggish, like somethings holding it back, tranny seems to shift when it suppose to but hits hard and winds out a little when going into 3rd....tranny fluid is full and doesn't look or smell burnt. we recently put on new brakes, rotors (on front), and rims with wider tires off a durango...but do not have a lift on it yet, so the tires rub a little, but they don't seem to be the problem as this is going on when the truck is in park and you give it gas.....

also, it's not throwing any codes

any suggestions on what to try or what it could be? thanks in advance

Seems like something is binding. Check your A/C compressor and other accessories for friction with the belt off. Otherwise, ( and I'm no expert ) it could be something in the tranny that is causing problems.

Go with the simple stuff first though before you start acting upon "the worst case scenario".

What, if anything, happened before the truck started doing this?

The trans should be electric, but it is possible that a vacuum leak could cause it to have a squeal, but it would be loudest at idle, or after reving it up then backing off the throttle.
Other things for the high pitched whine, I think I would check the idler pully, and things like that. As for feeling sluggish, that could be sooo many things.
Good Luck

think i may have figured it out...the stuttering, etc cleared itself up...think was jus from sitting, but as for the shifting...found out that switching from the 235 to the 265 tire has put the gear ratio off. it was originally a 3.5 now is shifting as a 3.71....calculation was done on two different websites using the new tire diam which is 30.64, the old tire diameter which was 28.87 with the original gear ratio of 3.5 which gives an effective gear ratio of 3.3 making the new gear ratio 3.71...if this is not currect please let me know..i don't even know if i explained it right...lol....so here is the website that helped me.....

http://www.4lo.com/calc/geartire.htm

thanks

i show your new "effective" gear ratio to be 3.35:1. so your truck is going to struggle a little more with those larger diameter tires.

ya, i know...that was what i was trying to figure out...but did, is there going to be any damage caused by running the truck this way? my old tires are now gone, so nothing to replace them with. and i checked to make sure they would work and all the sites said they would...what are my options? i suppose i need a new rear end? if so what else would i need to replace to accommodate this problem?
