Subject: need advice regarding cooling fan clutch IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 v6 dak 4x4 3.9L with about 68k miles. Three weeks ago I brought it in to check out a front engine noise that I thought was the belt tensioner. It turned out it was a worn fan clutch and water pump. So the garage replace those two parts. Since then when I first start the truck and drive it the fan makes this really loud noise almost like a flex fan would make. It does this for a 1/4 mile or so then goes away and the truck sound normal. I've noticed that the fan sometimes also does this noise while driving...it'll come on for about 15 secs then go back to normal. I took it back to the garage, they checked it out and said the fan cluch works on hydraulics and that it was working fine...I should expect it to do that. Why would it do that when the old part had never done that since I bought the truck new in 1999? Does this sound right?
Thanks for any help or advice on what I should do next.

Message: My fan clutch does the same thing, but really only when it is cold outside. Never in the summer.

Message: That's good to hear Milk Man...cause I thought it would only get worse in the summer. Yeah...if I'da thought about it when the truck was in for fixin...I'da def gone with the electric fan and picked up a couple of horses at the same time....lord knows I could have put in three electric fans with what that job cost me!

Message: that sounds like normal clutch fan operation. if you don't like the noise, you can eliminate the clutch fan with an electric.

Message: Daddio...that's what the technician told me. But my question was...why, in the 9 years I've had the truck, why haven't I heard the fan clutch make that noise before? He told me the original part probably never worked correctly. Does this make sense?

Message: could be the original part never worked properly. when i had the clutch fan on my '00 it would sound exactly as you described. when i'd start it up in the morning, summer or winter, it roar for about 1/2 a block then quit. in the summer in stop & go traffic with the a/c you could hear it every now and then as it needed.
since my truck came from the factory(as all did from '00- up) with an electric aux fan, i removed that pesky clutch and fan and run with just the electric. no problems or loss in cooling performance at all.
