Message: Can anyone help me diagnose my engine rattle ?
Symptoms are: OK at idle, noisy above about 2000 rpm but only really bad on very light throttle, using a bit of oil, it was low on oil when I got it.
I've read here that the timing chain is a common problem but it seems more like big end bearings to me, any other ideas or checks to confirm?
Thanks

Message: pinging/detonation + using a little oil= Intake Plenum Gasket. just to make sure look into the throttle body with the throttle open(engine not running of course) and look for a slight pooling of oil in the intake. i'm pretty sure it's that gasket from what you describe though.

Message: It does sound more like a rattle than the higher pitched pinging of detonation & I would normally expect detonation under a heavy load rather than very light throttle. THe plugs look an OK colour but I will investigate the gasket though.
