Thanks guys. The valve covers aren't quite as sparkly as they could be, but I wanted to clean it, not detail it :)
I just used the spray type of engine shampoo. I took off the intake, and twisted a couple of clean shop towels into the throttle bores, then put a plastic bag around it with an elastic. I also bagged the alternator. I used a brush on the grimier parts, but power washed the rest off.

I did the same thing to my engine last week. I love Castrol Super Clean. Spray on, rinse with power washer.

I did the same thing you did Lesley, took off the K&N Filter but instead of using rags and bags, I used those plastic hair shower caps to cover the intake and alternator. An friend of mine who details cars for a living told me about that trick. They have elastic in them and work great..

Just thought I would throw in my 2 cents worth.

You guys are lucky, your trucks were fairly clean when you got them. Mine had 10 years of dirt and rust when I got it. I think I have gotten it down to about 8 years of dirt and 9 years of rust now :)

I got it at Canadian Tire. I've also seen them at
AutoZone, Parts Source and Pep Boys. I'm not sure
what size it was, the connecting end is rubber so
it fit pretty good onto the PCV outlet.

I take mine to one of those do-it-yourself car washes. A pot scrubber is great for the really dirty areas. The engine has to be cool before you spray it, either with shampoo or water, so I usually clean the rest of the truck first. Take some plastic bags, elastics, and clean cloths if you plan to seal and protect anything under there (just my opinion).

Well, it allows you to get rid of that ugly hose
that runs from the air hat to the PCV filter, but
still allows clean filtered air to enter. Dunno
about performance improvement, but it sure looks
better. Most people just put it directly on their
valve covers, our emissions laws are so stringent
that I didn't want to take the PCV off, so I stuck
it on the hose connector.

lucky you, i have one to fit mine (K&N Crankcase filter) but i get oil and exhaust fumes and shiet out of it, so i had to run the stock hose up into my new air cleaner, at any rate i replaced the PCV valve and did some other stuff (the hose leading from the PCV valve is like half crushed or something, collapsed, but its not round so i dont know if replacing that woduld help or if i have really low compression in a cylinder and im getting too much fuel/air mixture leaking around my worn out 12 year old rings o what the deal is?
anyone have any ideas?

thanks! I bought a package of rubber grommets, about $3. One of them plugged the hole in the air hat just fine.
