Subject: Backfire IP: Logged
Message: My 02 Dakota 3.9 backfires almost everytime I down shift after coasting. Any suggestions?

Message: Check for codes, ign. switch on/off/on/off/on/off/on, not to start position, just on, should show codes at odometer.
A bad valve could cause a back fire, but if that was the case it would be more frequent, plus a few other problems, like low power,and rough running. you can do a compression test and see if you have any cylinder(s) with low compression, if so remove the plug from the low cyl. and squirt some oil in the cyl. and retest if compression doesn't come up its valve trouble. If it does come up then you would have ring problems.

Message: with 84K it shouldn't have bad rings. I could almost accept a
bad valve. I also consider nearly every time I down shift to be to
frequent. This truck is also a gutless wonder at best. I've had it
since 67K. I think it just may be time to trade for a V8. I'll
check for the codes.
