Message: - size of it, was largest midsize truck (nissan frontier may have that honor now)
- available V8
- dodge reliability (never had a major failure, went through 3 engines and 2 transmissions in an 85 ford ranger)
- was not a honda or toyota (i never liked either)
- looks
- very usable, 4x4 is solid, decent ground clearance, takes abuse and keeps going.
If i decide to get another midize truck, I'll consider the nissan frontier. i think there will be more aftermarket options than for dakota (lift kits). They are doing a good job competing against the dakota in terms of power and size.

Message: I love that they are so easy to modify and that it has smooth lines. The tranny is the only problem w/ this truck everything else seems to be great.

Message: I've always liked the styling ( well, after I got used to the "baby ram" look ...I didn't like the Ram when it came out ).
I like that it's easy to work on, I like the interior. What I like the most is the limited slip rear end.
My only complaints is that it just isn't as snappy as I'd like, though it's not horrible, and I had hoped for better mileage out of the V6. I mean, they get 250hp/250 ft.lbs out of the Magnum's V6 ( granted, it's a newer engine )
Oh, and the flaking paint isn't much of a plus.
I have a 1997 extended cab 2wd V6

Message: I like the most about mine is the 4 wheel drive, you can shift into 4wheel drive at any speed, and just keep on going. I think however most all of the trucks do that now though.

Message: Out of all the trucks I could afford (~1997-2001 vintage), the dak could do the most... With the forward-facing back seat, I can technically (and legally) fit 6 people in the cab, which is nice when you're trying to get yourself and 5 really drunk people through a sobriety checkpoint. And with the 6.5ft bed I can haul sheets of plywood or a queen sized bed pretty easily still. And the v6 can pull 5000 lbs of trailer, although it's really slow, but is fine for the occasional haul or lighter stuff. It does OK off road, too. And when I'm not doing any of that, it still gets 17/20mpg which is pretty good for a truck.
The '97-04's look great, and the factory infinity CD player has surprisingly good sound. If I had more money at the time, I'd have gotten a 4.7 instead of the 3.9, but the '98 I got had no rust and an immaculate interior. Couldn't be happier, given my budget.

Message: I forgot to mention the low end torque! I pulled up a couple of pompous grass bushes. One weighed around 150 - 200 lbs and produced a hole 14-18" deep!
recipe for redneck landscaping..
1 dakota
1 chain
1 h link to connect chain together
2 pompous grass bushes
1 lead foot
liquor optional!
hook it up, punch it down, rip it up!
02 dakota - $30,000
1 14 foot length of 5400 lb chain, $20
1 h-link, $6
the look on my neighbors faces... priceless
there's somethings money can't buy, for everything else, there's Dodge Dakotas.
