Last 2 mornings driving to work, no O/D at all, all the way in ( 25 miles ). It's been -11 so I can only assume that is the major factor here, as it's never done this before until it got that cold. Checked my fluid and I've got enough ( Idling, warmed up ), so it isn't low fluid causing it. When I leave work, I get O/D all the way back, as if nothing ever happened.

It's nice to have power on demand at 65mph, but dual exhaust @3000 rpm is a bit of a headache maker, if you know what I mean!

Anyone know what exactly is going on with this tranny? It was replaced 40k ago, and I know it's overdue for a fluid change....if it was a viscosity issue, you'd think that I'd get O/D back sometime along that 25 mile drive.

If you have a big tranny cooler, you might just not be getting up to temperature at -11 degrees outside.

Above may be half correct , but it is a heck of a
lot colder than that in northern areas , and the
fluid would not warm up all that fast.
Probably , more the issue here is a faulty
sensor on the side of the tranny.
Larry would know which one..

I knew that the tranny held out O/D when it was too cold, but you'd think that after 25 miles it would have warmed up enough just from the coolant warming up.

I shut the truck off at an intersection and restarted it yesterday to see if the computer would see the temp change, but I don't think I had the key off long enough for the computer to react properly.

No tranny cooler on the truck, and it's a 2wd extended cab with the 3.92 gears/limited slip.

The only other thing that I've experienced with this truck that may have some bearing is when I'd take a left turn when the truck was cold and punch it, it would slip out of gear when it shifted into 2nd ( truck was leveled out by then ) and if I let off the gas it would pop right into gear. It had done the same thing on a straight line take off WOT a couple of times. Hasn't done anything like that in the last couple of months though.

I'm gonna say that, yes, it remained cold enough not to shift into O/D or lockup. Minus 11F? It would take 25 miles of driving to combat that. Especially since highway driving would keep the tranny fluid cooler in the radiator than city driving would. My truck takes 4 miles of driving to get into lockup when it's 20F out.

And I don't know about the 2001 42RE tranny, but for the 42RH trannies, it won't go into O/D until coolant temperature is 60F, and lockup at 140F.

O/D and lockup also have sols check them 200 ohm
180 to 220 normal

92 to 95 on some towing packages will have a temp
sensor in the cooling line

96 and up when this ocures the temp sensor
is incoparated with the presure sensor

replace pressure sensor and solinoid

other than that sometimes the torque converter
change valve will hang up but this will not
effect o/d if both are effected I would lean
towards the sensor drop the pan and replace
both

When you wont shift cold but others do its not
the cold but the sensor reading wrong

dealer part around $200
this will solve the problem I have seen the same
100's of times with the RE trans

Thanks Larry. Would the probability of that same sensor be the reason I'd get a bad upshift from first to second when the tranny was cold under WOT conditions occasionally? Relatively frequent, but not EVERY time.
