Message: I have a 99 dak v6 w/ about 68K miles. Truck runs fine but I'm hearing a rattling in the front of the engine near the fan and accessories. Water temp seems normal and no coolant leaks. I'm thinking its the belt tensioner pulley. I hear this is a common problem w/ daks. Can anyone confirm this?
thanks,
Olindo

Message: I just diagnosed a rattling noise on my 98 3.9. I thought it had to be the alternator or tensioner -- it sounded like a worn-out bearing, coming from near the alternator. Almost like a grinding, scraping rattle...
Anyway with a stethoscope I isolated it to the passenger side valve cover -- it was the PCV valve! So try pulling the vacuum line off of the PCV valve and see of the noise goes away. Hopefully it does, it's a cheap fix to replace the valve. Good luck.

Message: Not the pcv valve...the sound seemed to emanate from the water pump area. So here's where it gets good. Since I didn't have the time to tackle the job I took it to a shop. Bad fan clutch and the wobbling fan shaft wore down the internals of the water pump. bottom line - new h20 pump and fan cluch...$800 friggin bucks...maybe I should've taken the day off and done it myself! WTF! Does any of this sound reasonable?
Thanks,

Message: Sorry to hear that, that's a lot to pay out for labor! But maybe worth it in the winter... I once tried to replace a water pump when it was 20degF -- horrible idea! Not only did it take all day, I didn't get a good seal either. I don't know if it was because permatex doesn't set up right that cold, or because my fingers were too numb to thread a screw right... But I did learn that blood will freeze before coolant will!

Message: we usually don't have that weather probelm down here. it may be 35degF one day and 75degF the next. if i need to work on the dak i put it off until a warm day shows up.
in south louisiana, if you don't like the weather, hang around a few minutes and it will change.
