Message: Help me out here! I'm wanting to put a 3 speed automatic behind a 93 model 3.9 dakota. Here lies the problem...........the crank sensor reads off the flywheel in these trucks. Is there any way to put a 904 or 727 or 999 or anything behind these motors. Will they even bolt to the engine? I need to do something, but do not wanna change computers or wiring harness. Are there any non-lockup trannys that will work behind this? I'm open to all suggestions, please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Message: robert, if you get a transmission from a small block engine it will bolt to your engine, the problem as you have stated is the crank shaft sensor on the flywheel. It might be possible to have a machine shop put the "markers" from your flywheel on the new flywheel so it would work. I think though on the auto they are on the torque converter, in which case you may be able to have a machine shop put them on the new torque converter. I don't know how much of a job that would be, but may be worth a try.
Good Luck

Message: The crank pickup is seporate just bolt it back up
behind the flex plate.
Any 727 904 will bolt up and work as long as you
use the converter and flex plate for the trans
What I have seen many do here is cut out a hole
and mount the sensor in the bell of the old style
trans just mesure the height
Base timing remove fuel pump relay crank and check
10 degrees before tdc timing light

Message: Thanks for the input! What will the crank sensor read off of if i change from a 5-speed to a auto? I'm not understanding. Doesn't the crank sesor control timing? What will the sensor read off of on the auto? If i'm not mistaken isn't the converter and flywheel made together on the 727 and 904? IF you get a chance call me at 270 312-8169

Message: sorry, didn't mean to not answer your question! the reason i don't want a overdrive is because of the weight and the horsepower loss associated with overdrive trannys. Also i don't run the truck on the open road very much.....just bust the imports ass around here on the streets. With the new turbo set-up, changing gears sucks, losing to much boost between shifts, not to mention i've pretty much done waded my ax-15. It wont shift without grinding anymore, plus it pops out of first gear damn near everytime.

Message: good reasons! IMO, with boost, you're better off with an auto. even though my preference is a manual.
