dak, if you have a NV3500 you should be able to tow an equal amount of weight, if you have the AX15 its not as strong. I'm sure yours doesn't have the NV A535, that sure enough isn't very strong to use for towing. Try to find out which one you have, there should be a tag on the drivers side of the truck on the transmission and it will have the model and the serial# then you can ask a Dodge dealer what the capassity is.
Good Luck

Gears will play an important role in towing capacity. Taller gears (higher numerically) will help protect the transmission and clutch.

The 2000 V6 5speed 2WD I used to own listed the towing capacities in the ever-so-useful owners manual. Because that truck had the wonderful 3.21 gears, it listed towing as N/A. LMAO! Anyways, I'd start by finding out what gear you had and then reference the owners manual. Oh and I agree with daddio, my 2000 had a NV3500.

In terms of powertrain, the gears typically dictate towing capacity. An 83 Honda Civic could pull 10,000 pounds if it had 14.1 gears. Stopping or turning is what is going to be the issue. Consider this when upgrading a truck's powertrain to increase towing capacity. Brakes, tires, and suspension all need to be taken into account. Sorry for my rant and I know it is not what you asked, but I just threw out my $0.02 to try to stop someone from doing something unsafe.

Good info Jay - except you mean lower gears, not taller. Tall gears are highway gears like the 3.21 you mentioned.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

I'm not saying this is accurate, but it's seems close:

Since you have the 3.92 (instead of 3.55 or 3.21)gears, I'm guessing you have the 5,450 lb tow rating.

Automatics always have higher towing capacity. Reason is that if you overload a manual, you fry the clutch and get progressively worse. With an automatic, you can increase its cooling capacity or just pull over periodically to let it cool.
