I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota Pu 5speed 3.9L 2wd 203,000 miles. Will not go into any of the gears including Rev. I have tryed it while running and even shut off and rocked it and try to engage while off. Took of top face plate under gear shift. Has left and right motion fully but no up or down moment.

I had the same thing happen to my 97 w/40K. Probably the syncro mesh. Stuck in neutral and won't go into gear.

Is there a fix for this without replacing tranny, is there a way to tell if this is the case.

Mine was still fairly new when it happened. Battle with dodge to rplace it due to the poor history of the truck. They put in a rebuilt tranny with a 12 month warranty. Since you have to take it out to repair it, it might be cheaper in the long run to swap it out for a rebuilt with some kind of warranty, especially since it's not too old of a truck. Not sure how you could confirm the problem with out pulling it.

Steven, if it needs to be rebuilt, whatever you do, Do Not let "High Gear LLC" Memphis, Tn. rebuild it for you, they did mine wrong, then refused to honor the $500 warranty that I paid for, then rebuilt it again, with a charge of course, and I put just 9 miles on it and it was making so much noise I pulled it out and took it to a junk yard and a guy there knew what was wrong and rebuilt it again correctly. (a lot cheaper I might add)
Good Luck
