How well does the heat in your trucks keep you warm? I put the stock thermostat back in hoping it would make it warmer, but there seems to be no change. The temp gage reads I'm guessing around 190 (with a new 195 Tstat), but the heat just isn't warm. This is in about 15-20 F air temps going to work in the mornings. If I had to guess, I would say the temp inside the cab with heat all the way up and fan on 3rd speed setting, it doesn't get above 50 F.

What should I look for as causes? Or is this just what I have to expect with the dakota (poor heat)?

There are no leaks and coolant is topped off in radiator and overflow.

Same problem with older Dakota. I back flushed the heater core. It worked so well, I installed fittings on the heater hoses and do it every year.

I replaced my Tstat the same as you, AND backflushed the heater core, then flushed it the normal way. I'm getting plenty of flow through it. Problem is that the truck doesn't flow coolant through it as fast as I'd like. It is much better than it was, but certainly not heat like my 1977 Pontiac Catalina had. You may want to replace your radiator cap and make sure your system is holding pressure.
