Message: I have been looking around at smaller trucks, and i really like the Dakota(97-2004). I need to be able to haul my Atv in the Box while towing a buddies atv on a trailer behind it. My atv weights 600 Pounds and the Trailer/atv will weight 1100 pounds. How do these trucks perform loaded and towing? Is the V6 up to this or do i need the V8. I'm not that concerned with tire burning performance, But don't want something that will stall out on small hills.
Thanks,

Message: I have an 02 dakota 4x4 with the V6. I have pulled my 2 quads on my trailer which would weight in somewhere around 1800 lbs and it really struggles going on a flat surface. It wont keep a steady speed u gotta keep giving it more gas. so now im looking at a full size truck and wanting to sell my dakota. In my opinion i would look for a V8

Message: as long as the 3.9 V6 is running good it will do just fine i have a 1993 dodge dakota that has the 3.9 in it and i have pulled my dads 3,000 lb boat to the lake before absolutly no problems with it and i have also had the bumper of my truck like an inch away from the ground because of the wood skids me and my dad got and it did just fine, just if your pulling something in a area with alot of hills turn the overdrive off... my email is spikeboy872003@yahoo.com if you want to know any more info about the v6

Message: I'd go with a V8...with stock suspension on my 98 V6, my Yamaha Big Bear 400 would really squat my truck. In town wasn't too bad, but on the highway, you really knew it was back there. I can't imagine trying to pull another ATV on a trailer. With the new shocks, it doesn't squat it down much anymore, but it still bogs it down a bit. I'd imagine it could pull it...but the money you save by going with a smaller engine may quickly be eaten up by all the extra time and gas it sucks up driving slower and having to nearly floor it to get a full load moving.

Message: i put a 500 lbs snowmobile in the back of my truck and i couldnt even tell, in fact the truck rode smoother
guess that tends to happen on a 1 ton :)
ive hauled it in my dakota as well, no problem, the LA V6 sucked, but the v8 is so much nicer
ive also hauled 4 to 5 adults 200 lbs each, and in college 7 guys in the back, not too many problems with that
just sucked the power out of the truck with that v-6, thats all

You should try pulling a 13,000lb bulldozer with your 1 ton...I bet you'll feel it then. =P
My buddy sold his and we agreed to deliver it...pulled it with an RC Ram 3500 dually that the dealership his grandpa owns uses to deliver the larger campers. I think our top speed while on flat ground was 60mph (70mph while drafting semis), going uphill 25mph, going up the mountains in Kentucky 10mph (when the engine wasn't cutting out due to overheating...then it was 2mph). Talk about a scary drive. lol

Not sure what year the Ram was...had to be 94-2000. Wasn't the new bodystyle. It had a lot of miles and the dealership guys said it had to be warmed up before it could tow without bogging down so I'm assuming it probably had a lot of power loss through wear and tear. Was pretty funny on the mountains...it would nearly overheat going up the mountains/hills and the engine would automatically cut power to prevent it from overheating which allowed us to BARELY keep moving forward. And then once we peaked over the hill and started going down you could watch the temp gauge immediately drop back down to normal. I think if it had a beefed up cooling system it would have made a HUGE improvement.
